Video game trailers serve a specific purpose: to get fans excited about stuff that’s coming up. Sure, we may get information and details about games from trailers, but hype is the ultimate goal. We can all agree on that, right?

But recently, pre-hype-hype is the new jam. Take, for instance, today’s tweet from Rockstar Games:

As you can see, there are some trailers coming on April 30. That’s great. But do we need an announcement to announce what is, effectively, an announcement? Shouldn’t we just get the damn trailers on April 30 and be done with it? No, because now we’re talking about it. I tell you, Rockstar’s got a great scam going, and we are all falling in line with it—myself completely and utterly included.

Anyway, it seems as though we’ll get three trailers next week, one for each of Grand Theft Auto V’s protagonists. Anything more than that, I got no idea. But I’m into it. I’ll be watching. Keep your eyes here for the trailers once they’re released on Tuesday.

If you haven’t already, be sure to scope out our in-depth preview coverage of Ubisoft’s newest installment in their top franchise, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. This time around, the protagonist is Edward Kenway, the grandfather of Assassin’s Creed III’s Connor Kenway.

This time around, you’re a pirate! And also, an assassin. So, by day, you go around killing people with guns and swords and stuff on the high seas. By night, you do, uh, the same thing, but more quietly. Hm.

Well, well, color me surprised, I half expected Naughty Dog to become the Sony version of Bungie, a company forced to develop one game franchise from here till the end of eternity, with that franchise being the Uncharted games. Well, it seems I am wrong, as the above trailer confirms that Naughty Dog will be making the above PS3 exclusive The Last of Us. It looks to be a zombie game, which is a little played out, but the game looks outstanding, with the graphics running real time on the PS3. That’s some hot stuff right there.

As a major fan of the original Alan Wake, I’m very interested in tonight’s officially confirmed Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, an XBLA-exclusive digital title coming from the folks over at Remedy Games. Continuing one from last year’s somewhat successful horror title, this game picks up where the last one left off, but it seems Alan has left behind the American northwest for some other darker interpretations of American vistas. Also along for the ride seems to be a new female character and Mr. Scratch, Alan’s new evil doppelganger, who should offer some compelling plot twists moving forward. I’m very excited to see where this one goes.

Check out the TGS trailer above for Silent Hill: Downpour. I think many hardcore Silent Hill fans might be a little worried about this one. Light on spooks and heavy on some generic butt rock (courtesy of Korn), this entry is looking a whole lot like Alan Wake, actually. Now, I loved Alan Wake, but it’s not exactly the thing I want to play when I’m craving the psychological horror of Silent Hill. Developer Vatra Games and Konami have a lot riding on this entry in the franchise, and if it falters like Homecoming, I don’t know if the franchise could recover.

Comic-Con may have been light on news and announcements, but holy hell were there some bitchin’ ass trailers. Here’s a collection of the best we’ve seen out of the show. We’ve got Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Batman: Arkham City, Gears of War 3, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Battlefield 3… nothing but heavy hitters. I particularly enjoyed the Deus Ex: Human Revolution trailer, but I’m a sucker for combining live action and convincing CG.
