Going the route of THQ…?

A post on Joystiq reports that publisher Majesco faces the possibility of being delisted from NASDAQ because the company’s stock value has dropped too low. If a company’s stock price is below $1 for more than 30 days, it gets booted. However, the company can avoid delisting if, in the next 180 days it manages to raise its stock value up to a buck for ten consecutive business days.

The last time a game publisher had this kind of problem was THQ, which, back in January of last year, was warned for just the same thing. By July the company had managed to raise its stock value and avoid losing its place on the NASDAQ. Of course, six short months later, THQ filed for bankruptcy and was sold off piece-by-piece to different companies.

We’ll see what happens to Majesco in the coming months…but situations like this don’t typically bode well.

Fresh from the weekend’s Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle come new screenshots from Majesco’s new retro-style jam, Double Dragon Neon. There isn’t much to say other than that, but the game’s set to come out for the PSN and XBLA on September 11 for ten dollars.

I want this game. No real reason why…it just looks like dumb fun. Blap.

I have fond memories of playing through Double Dragons in my friend Dan’s basement. Dan had an NES, and I didn’t have shit, so pretty much all of my memories of classic gaming were formed at that kid’s house. Anyway, DOUBLE DRAGON. That was Nintendo’s premier side-scrolling beat-em-up. It was awesome.

And today Eurogamer clued me in to a high definition, slick-looking remake called Double Dragon Neon from Majesco, which is making its way to the PSN and XBLA for a mealy ten bucks on September 11 and 12, respectively.

Take a look at that trailer. Is it just the nostalgia in me that thinks that looks fantastic? Probably. But this is gonna be one of those games I kind of have to get. I can’t help it.

Who’s with me?

Bonus feature: Ensure that your downstairs neighbors hate you forever!

If you asked any of my friends (SERIOUSLY GO AHEAD AND ASK THEM), I’ve said time and time again, “You know, fellows? What NBA basketball really needs is more dribble-based hip-hop dancing. THEN I’d be interested!”

Well, Majesco must totally have my house bugged, because they’ve STOLEN MY IDEA FOR THEIR NEW KINECT GAME. It’s called NBA Baller Beats, and it will “get players on their feet mastering mad ball handling skills using a real basketball while playing to the beat of an eclectic soundtrack.”

Said Jesse Sutton, CEO of Majesco:

“NBA Baller Beats introduces an unprecedented way to experience basketball through a video game like never before. Our innovative play mechanic combined with Kinect technology puts the ball in players’ hands, tracking both full-body gameplay and ball movement, so players are going to have to get up and actually play basketball to get in the game. Ballers and fans alike will love this game.”

You hear that, BALLERS? You will love this game. Not only that, if you think you’re just, like, a regular baller, this game will help you become THE ULTIMATE BALLER. Here’s some gameplay details from the press release Macjesco sent out this morning:

“Aspire to perform like a pro in NBA Baller Beats as you train alongside your favorite NBA franchise unlocking songs, difficulty levels, and over 100 posters and trading cards showcasing NBA players’ greatest moves. The music is your guide as you master ball handling skills, dribbling, and baller moves with a real basketball as Kinect technology tracks your every crossover, pump fake, behind-the-back, around-the-world and more! Become the ultimate baller and increase your stamina in single player mode, break it down and practice different skills in Move School mode or show-off in multiplayer mode and go head-to-head against up to 8 players – the highest score wins bragging rights.”

That’s right—when you get to school or work the next day, you will have BRAGGING RIGHTS. Because who wouldn’t want to brag about being the best at dribbling a basket ball in front of the television in their own living room? It’s not like there are specific, pre-made places indoors and outdoors in every town and city in America where one can go to practice and hone basketball skills and simultaneously show off that they actually have skills worth bragging about.

Oh, also? Who needs shooting? What an overrated part of basketball. I’ve also always said that to my friends:

“Gentlemen, please! Stop trying to convince me that shooting the basketball to score points is one of the most important parts of the game! It’s dribbling! And around-the-world moves! That’s what makes basketball so exciting. What’s that? ‘Basket’ is right in the name of the game? POPPYCOCK. Fie on your ‘baskets!’ Fie, I say!”

The game will feature music by Kanye West, Run DMC, Gorillaz, Them Crooked Vultures, Common, Tiesto and others, says the press release. It’s set to come out this fall exclusively for the Kinect.

WELL? HAVE YOU PRE-ORDERED THIS YET?!

The game’s being published by Majesco, says a press release announcing the game’s existence, and will feature “an array of sexy fighters” who have to fight for freedom from The Foundation, “a shadowy, scientific organization looking to weaponize the psionic fighting abilities of the cast of gorgeous, all-female fighters.” So, you know, this doesn’t sound weird or creepy at all. Just another fighting game about beautiful women with psionic powers who are abducted to…fight…each other…for some reason. “To make it back to reality, the women must utilize their fighting and psionic abilities in an all-out battle for survival.” Okay, then. I’m not totally on board with this one, I gotta say. Mostly because it’s called, you know, “Girl Fights,” and yet it pretends to have a story. It’s got shadowy corporations and science-fiction powers…but it’s called GIRL FIGHT. Why not just make a game called “Girl Fight” and say, “this is a game about girls, who fight, GO”? Why pretend that this is something other than it’s not? That said, I am curious to see if this thing is truly anything more than some weird cheesecake game about girls fighting. Next up from Majesco, the officially licensed game for the Female Mud-Wrestling League™ (FML)!

The game’s price has been lowered from 1200 Microsoft Points/$15 to a more manageable 800 Points/$10, according to a press release sent out earlier today. The price drop is permanent, so if you’re still on the fence, you’ve got time to think about it. Of course, if you didn’t buy it the first time around, it could be because you were swayed by our review…which gave it a not-so-stellar score of 5 out of 10. But hey!
[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.] “Awesome” is not a word I would generally associate with the BloodRayne franchise (games, movies, or otherwise) but, man, BloodRayne Betrayal looks frickin’ awesome. The debut gameplay trailer for the downloadable game from Majesco and WayForward Technologies feels like it was lifted straight out of an episode of Metalocalypse. It’s fast, bloody, and features some sweet metal solos. Expect more news on BloodRayne Betrayal out of this year’s E3.

Majesco’s pulling out the big guns today, announcing the resurrection to the long-dormant BloodRayne series with BloodRayne: Betrayal. The new game will be a 2.5D downloadable side-scroller developed by WayForward Technologies. While you may be groaning at the BloodRayne title, WayForward has ample chops when it comes to platformers. They developed the cult classic Shantae as well as the impossibly adorable A Boy and His Blob (2009). No screens or gameplay available for the title yet, which is odd considering the game is aiming for a Summer 2011 release on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. I don’t give two testicles about BloodRayne, but WayForward can work some magic on the 2D plane, so this might be worth checking out.
