A post on Eurogamer today reports that Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the now legendary Final Fantasy franchise, is leaving the world of console game-making for mobile games. And that his first game will be a surfing game.

Yes, really.

Apparently, Sakaguchi was at a BAFTA event in London yesterday, and he explained that when he’s finished working n Wii RPG game The Last Story, scheduled for release in Europe next week, he’ll be working on a trio of “small projects,” saying, “the first one is a surfing game.”

And apparently, the interviewer must’ve had a look on his face. Probably the look you had when you first read this. So Sakaguchi’s translator helped him out, saying, “he’s not joking.”

Apparently, Sakaguchi has a deep love of surfing, and that his participation in the sport was where he would come up with ideas for games. There and “while taking a shower.” Interesting.

His move toward the iOS platform is a result of being “an Apple fan,” but Sakaguchi still believes that console games aren’t in danger of being dethroned by mobile devices any time soon. Or, in fact, ever:

“Images outputted by PCs or consoles will always be of higher quality, so they will never disappear off the face of the Earth.”

Indeed. So let it be written. So let it be done.
