What could this one be?

This morning, Bethesda took to Twitter once again to start teasing a mystery project, linking to three images hosted on GameSpot:

discover this morning @gamespot twitter.com/Bethblog/statu…

— Bethesda Softworks (@Bethblog) May 6, 2013

One’s at the top of the post, with the other two right below:

While GameSpot doesn’t offer much in the way of information or details on what these images could be, a post on GameInformer speculates that it might be related to a possible Wolfenstein game, though the rationale is based mostly on the images’ URLs (in that each image is labeled “z1960,” “y1960,” and then “x1960,” leaving “w1960” as a potential next image).

Bethesda’s Twitter account helped winnow down the possibilities for what this new game might be by saying this:

this morning’s tease is not related to anything @bgs_devs is working on

— Bethesda Softworks (@Bethblog) May 6, 2013

That, of course, refers to Bethesda Game Studios, the in-house studio responsible for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3. So that would seem to quash the possibility that this is for Fallout 4…unless that game is coming from a different studio.

Bethesda’s been having plenty of fun with Twitter. Last month, the publisher teased its new survival horror game The Evil Within via Vine videos, with a reveal on IGN later that week. Hopefully we’ll get a similarly quick reveal this time around.

Start your rampant speculation…now!

[GameSpot via GameInformer]

Confirming the rumors from late last week, today Bethesda announced the forthcoming release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Legendary Edition, which includes the base game, plus all three DLC packs. For the price of $59.99, you’ll be able to bring home the full Skyrim experience for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC starting June 4 in North America, with European and Australian releases a few days later on June 7.

The compilation also includes some other added features, including “combat cameras, mounted combat, Legendary difficulty mode for hardcore players, and Legendary skills,” so that’s nice. Right? Right.

It’s cool to know that the full thing—the total taco, as it were—is going to be available to people like me who still haven’t gone down the Skyrim rabbit hole. That said, I still probably won’t get it anytime soon. I can barely commit to watching a movie these days, what with my short attention span. No…if it doesn’t have space ships or Batman in it, it’s a tough sell for me. Alas! But all you other Dragonborn virgins—have at it.

Sure, the big news today is the reveal of Bethesda’s new survival horror game, The Evil Within. But that doesn’t mean that Skyrim will go quietly into the good night. A post on CVG today points the way to Polish retailer Ultima, which lists The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Legendary Edition on its site for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. On consoles, it only costs 169.90 zł! Apparently Poland’s currency is the “złoty,” and unfortunately, all I can think of now is this guy. I think I might have a problem.

Anyway, that converts out to about $55, so if this is a real product that gets released in the States, don’t be surprised if it costs about $60. The listing also says it includes all the DLC that’s been released for Skyrim, including “Dawnguard,” “Hearthfire,” and “Dragonborn,” and, of course, the regular game. The release date is slated for June 7, but until we hear something official from Bethesda, we can’t be sure that this is the real deal.

But don’t be surprised if it does come out. Skyrim was a huge hit, but that doesn’t mean that everybody bought it. For instance: I didn’t. I’m also not sure that I’d buy this either, even if it is a good deal. But having a fully loaded edition with everything included in it is a smart move on Bethesda’s part, ensuring longtime future sales for those gamers who finally decide to jump on the dragon’s back.

Resident Evil creator’s new project with Tango Gameworks…

Today was the big reveal: Bethesda is going to be publishing The Evil Within, a new surivival-horror game from Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and his studio Tango Gameworks. The game was unveiled in collaboration with IGN, and it’ll come out in 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-gen consoles.

Said Mikami about the forthcoming game:

“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within. My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.”

The trailer is on the IGN page, and is made up entirely of live-action sequences that are really creepy—and otherwise tell you nothing about what the hell the game is about. There’s a lady who’s all bloody and has four arms, and a guy with a box on his head, and inside the box are tentacles, and a man making barbed wire. Yup, this is a survival horror game. More details are scheduled to be revealed through IGN on Monday, so if you’re curious, keep your eyes peeled then.

Prior to the reveal, the project was known as Zwei, and in the week leading up to the unveiling, Bethesda had posted short clips that hinted at this trailer. They still don’t make a lick of sense, but at the very least, we can tell what they’re from. Now that we know a little more about it, what do you think of The Evil Within? What do you hope for? First-person? Third-person? Would you have rather had Fallout 4?

Update

It seems that IGN couldn’t wait until tomorrow, as there’s a new post that says Bethesda’s new game is, indeed, Project Zwei (which is just a codename) from Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, and his studio Tango Gameworks.

<del>Chances seem good that there’s going to be a survival horror element to the game,</del> It’s definitely a survival horror game, which isn’t too surprising considering Mikami’s legacy and the teasers we’ve seen so far. The game’s full reveal should go live tomorrow on IGN at 8 a.m. Eastern.

Original Post

This one’s pretty creepy—and still no real clues as to what the hell we’re seeing here. What you see above is the third and seemingly final six-second video teaser for Bethesda’s new game project. Guesses that it’s for a new installment in the Fallout franchise have been rebuffed by the company’s VP, Pete Hines, and others have speculated that this new game—whatever it is—might be Wolfenstein, Project Zwei, or maybe something new entirely.

Consider the past: other viral-style, mysteriously hyped projects were revealed to be Elder Scrolls Online and Dishonored. I literally cannot even begin to guess what this could be anymore.

Anyway, Bethesda’s Twitter account says that the “mystery [will be] revealed tomorrow @IGN,” so I guess we’ll see what all the hub-bub is about sometime tomorrow.

So, with one more day before the big reveal…START SPECULATING! What the hell is going on? Who’s this creepy figure with the hair? WHY AM I HAVING ALL OF THESE NIGHTMARES WITH MY EYES OPEN?!

DEATH TO ALL SUNFLOWERS.

Yesterday saw Bethesda release a short teaser-trailer for something via Vine. Today they’re at it again with the teaser you see above you. It has the same grainy video quality as yesterday’s teaser, but with no records, barbed wire, or sheet music. It does, however, feature the same scratchy record sound, as well as a bunch of sunflowers getting lit on fire. Fun!

We also learned from Pete Hines that the teasers probably aren’t for a new installment in the Fallout franchise. Speculators have suggested that this could be for a new Wolfenstein or Project Zwei, as discussed on this Eurogamer post from yesterday. As to whether or not those guesses are accurate…well, we’ll have to wait for more clues, or an official word from Bethesda.

What do you think? I have a sneaking suspicion that this could very well be something all-new, and all-different. And honestly, that’d be great. Bethesda has a lot of awesome properties in its stable, but as we learned with last year’s hit Dishonored, it never hurts to take a chance on publishing something new. Start listing your guesses in the comments below…

This next Tuesday, Bethesda and Arkane Studios will be releasing “The Knife of Dunwall,” some slick looking DLC for last year’s hit, Dishonored. In it, you take on the role of Daud, the titular Knife of Dunwall, and it seems a whole lot like you cut a swath of murder and mayhem through the city—all while feeling bad about yourself. Oh, you tortured antiheroes. When will you go out of style? Let’s hope never.

Anyway, the trailer above looks pretty cool…so keep your eyes peeled for when the DCL drops next Tuesday for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. What do you think so far? Anyone out there still clamoring for Dishonored content? And on that note, we still haven’t found out what the deal is with the two trademarks Bethesda registered in February: “The Brigmore Witches” and “Void Walker’s Arsenal.” Think they’re part of the Dishonored universe? Might they wind up being DLC? Hmmmm!

Is this “The Other Side of the Coin”?

The last few weeks have been rife with possibilities regarding DLC for Bethesda’s new franchise, Dishonored. Today, the publisher’s official Twitter account posted the above image with this simple message: “Get ready! #dishonored”

Well, we know what the game is, for sure, but what, precisely, might this image signify? A post on CVG suggests that the new content will cast players as one of Daud’s assassin’s (Daud being the leader of a group of assassin’s within the world of Dishonored, of course). So is this going to be “The Other Side of the Coin,” showing gamers the story from a different perspective? Is there going to be any relation to “The Brigmore Witches” and “Void Walker’s Arsenal?”

Let us know what you think…and what you want.

Games about killing Nazis never go out of style.

A post on Polygon today gathers evidence and makes a bold pronouncement: id Software and Bethesda Softworks have a new Wolfenstein game in the pipeline. Apparently, game music composer Julian Beeston lists work on an in-development Wolfenstein game with Machinegames, a studio acquired by Bethesda-owned id Software a couple years ago.

Add to that the blips about work being done on a Wolfenstein movie from November, not to mention Bethesda-parent company ZeniMax registering “wolfenstein.com” in 2012, and you’ve got some pretty decent evidence starting to pile up.

The only real question of course is whether or not we need another Wolfenstein game. I mean…it’s not like we’re hurting for first-person shooters, or games where you kill Nazis, or combinations of the two. My hope? FUTURE-NAZI KILLING. Like, future-wolfman-zombies (because cyborgs and zombies have already been done).

Thoughts?

Two days ago, Betehsda VP Pete Hines tweeted that a firm release date for Skyrim DLC on the PlayStation 3 would arrive soon, and, lo and behold, it’s finally arrived: according to the Bethblog, PS3 gamers in North America will get their first shot at “Dragonborn” on February 12. “Hearthfire” will follow a week later on February 19, and “Dawguard” will appear yet one week more on February 26.

And the DLC will all be 50 percent off during its first week on the PSN, making “Dawnguard” and “Dragonborn” both about $10 instead of their usual price of $20, and “Hearthfire” will be a mere $2 instead of $4 (these prices, I should note, are estimates based on their current prices on XBLA…though I’m pretty sure they’re accurate).

So there you go. Two more weeks of waiting, and then you’re all set. Meanwhlie, European PS3 gamers will have their firm release date soon…so keep your eyes peeled. It’s happening for real, you guys.

The saga of PS3-owning Skyrim gamers has been a tragic one. While the Xbox 360 has enjoyed three DLC packs, and the PC has had two, the PlayStation 3 has gotten a big fat DONUT when it comes to downloadable content packs for Skyrim. Bethesda has been working for months on trying to overcome the technical difficulties that have delayed the DLC, and now it seems that work is paying off.

Here’s what Bethesda VP Pete Hines Tweeted about it:

PS3 1.8 Update and all 3 DLC have passed Sony America cert. We’re also finalizing cert with Europe. Waiting to hear the exact release dates.

— Pete Hines (@DCDeacon) January 30, 2013

BOOM! Passed American certification (confirmed in a reply as applying to Canada as well)! Sony Europe is all that stands between Skyrim fans and a week of discounted DLC! DID CHRISTMAS COME EARLY?!

And at a discount during launch week on PS3…

The wait is finally over. This morning, Bethesda announced that the long-awaited DLC packs for Skyrim would be making their way to the PlayStation 3 and PC platforms next month. Woohoo!

The PC is going to get the Dragonborn DLC on February 5 via Steam, while the PS3 will get all three DLC packs (Dragonborn, Hearthfire, and Dawnguard, in that order) as the month continues. Interestingly, Bethesda’s post doesn’t mention a specific date in February, which is troubling considering the trouble they had getting the DLC out for the PS3 in the first place. But, in what seems like something of an apology to spurned PS3 fans, the DLC packs will be 50 percent off during their first week of launch on the PSN. How’s that for an “I’m sorry”? I think it’s pretty aight.

Any PS3 gamers feel good about this? Or is it a case of too little, too late?

Three Dog drops the word on something Fallout-related.

Fallout 3 voice actor Erik Todd Dellums, famously known as in-game radio personality Three Dog, recently took to Twitter to tease what many hope is Fallout 4. However, all we know is that it’s somehow related to both Fallout 3 and the game’s Three Dog character.

To quote Dellums directly:

To all my #Fallout3 and #ThreeDog fans: There may be more of the Dog coming! Fingers crossed!

— Erik Todd Dellums (@ETDellums) January 8, 2013

And while many would shrug this news off as nothing but simple Internet conjecture, it’s the reply Tweet that was posted minutes later that more clearly indicates something more interesting is in the works:

@toasttherabbit How was that for a tease! I was given permission to release that tease, so fingers crossed.

— Erik Todd Dellums (@ETDellums) January 8, 2013

Obviously, and as mentioned above, many (including myself) would like to think of this as enticing foreshadowing to a hopefully-to-be-made-soon announcement for Fallout 4. On an even more hopeful note, how does Fallout 4 in the Creation Engine (Skyrim) sound? That’s what I thought.

Bring it on, Bethesda. Make me a happy man-child. Make us all happy man-children.

[Source: Twitter via Destructoid]

Grab these deals before the discounts disappear into OBLIVION.

Today’s the very last day of Microsoft’s Countdown to 2013 Daily Deals, and to celebrate that, they’ve got some pretty solid discounts on Bethesda’s Elder Scrolls offerings. Skyrim is half-off, costing only $30, while Oblivionis a mere $10. The DLC is mega-cheap too: “Dawnguard” is half-off, selling for 800 MSP ($10), “Hearthfire” is only 200 MSP ($2.50), and “Shivering Isles” and “Knights of the Nine” are 600 ($7.50) and 200 MSP respectively.

Boom! That’s some cheap RPG content, man. This is the end of the line for sales, so if you’re still somehow not completely snowed under with cheap games that you’ve bought and now need to find some time to play, well, you might as well jump on this too. Me, I’ve barely made a dent. I mean, hell, I think I’ve only managed to log three or four hours in Assassin’s Creed III. Meanwhile, I’ve started my second game of XCOM (on easy mode) after I screwed the pooch on normal. I’m not ashamed to admit it. THAT GAME IS REALLY HARD.

Happy New Year, everyone. Stay safe out there.

Today, Bethesda and id Software have released “The Scorchers” DLC for a measly five bucks on Xbox 360, with the PS3 version to be available later today. In addition to offering up new battles against the “maniacal bandit clan,” the DLC provides new weapons and areas to explore. Not only that, but it adds the “Ultra-Nightmare” difficulty mode (it’s hard), as well as “Extended Play” to allow gamers to continue pasts the ending and continue collecting junk and cheevos.

So! It’s out, and as you can see at the top of the post, there are a few screens for you to enjoy. They are creepy. Well, mostly that one with the guy that looks like he’s made entirely out of eye-crusts. That’s the creepy one. Yikes.

On December 11—that’s next Tuesday—“Dunwall City Trials” will go live. That’s the first DLC pack for Bethesda’s new IP, Dishonored, which will include 10 challenge maps for about five bucks.

And as you watch the trailer, you’ll discover what I did: there’s actually a Dishonored rap playing. Right? Isn’t that a rap themed around the events of Dishonored? Or am I crazy? Or just behind the times, not knowing what hip-hop songs have the word “Dunwall” repeated over and over in them? I feel old.

Anyway, Dishonored DLC hitting next week. Mark your calendar.

Remember Rage from John Carmack, id Software, and Bethesda? Well, a year after it was released, it seems it’ll be getting some DLC, according to a post on Joystiq today. The news comes by way of PS3Trophies.org, which found ten new trophies having been added that hint at new content for the post-apocalyptic shooter. The post also points out that there’s a PEGI listing for “Rage: The Scorchers,” which would seem to point to the potential DLC’s name.

Stay tuned…and try to calm down. You know…because of all the rage.

Better-than-expected sales equals a sequel, natch.

Did you buy Dishonored? I was so close the other day, but I refrained because I’ve already got a ton of games to get through, and adding Bethesda and Arkane Studios’ first-person-steampunk-assassination simulator seemed like it would just get buried under the growing pile of unplayed titles. But I’m clearly in the minority: Destructoid reports that Bethesda is so pleased with Dishonored’s performance that it’s now officially being regarded as a sequel-worthy franchise.

Bethesda’s VP Pete Hines dropped the news:

“I can tell you that Dishonored is far exceeding our sales expectations, which is especially cool considering it’s new IP facing a host of well-established franchises this quarter. We did terrific numbers again this past weekend, both in stores and on Steam, where Dishonored was listed as the #1 selling title over the holiday weekend. And Dishonored has really sold well overseas.

So, we’re very pleased and appreciate all the fans that have supported Dishonored and Arkane. We clearly have a new franchise.”

When will the sequel happen? Who knows? But you can rest-assured it’s going to happen. In the meantime, get ready for some $5 DLC to appear on December 11.

And it’s only five dollars.

Bethesda sent out a press release today to announce that the DLC for their recent new IP, Dishonored, will hit Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on December 11 for the low-low cost of five bucks.

The new DLC, called “Dunwall City Trials,” will offer up 10 challenge maps, new achievements/trophies, and online leaderboards. Not a ton of content, no, but for five dollars, it ain’t bad. Still playing Dishonored? Anyone pick it up on Black Friday/Cyber Monday? I saw it on Amazon for $25…but I resisted the temptation, since I’d already bought XCOM: Enemy Unknown on Steam. I gotta have some self-control.
