Read up on some of the hottest new indie titles on the block before the show begins in April.

As is tradition with the still fairly young but incredibly popular trade event PAX East, the east coast iteration of the Penny Arcade Expo will play host to the Boston Indie Showcase, an event focused on highlighting some of the years creative up and comers.

Below are the games being featured at this spring’s show. There’s a good chance we’ll get some hands-on time with them at the show, so read up on some of the hottest new indies on the block before the show begins in April.

Bean’s Quest

In Bean’s Quest from developer Kumobius, your girlfriend has been taken by an evil wizard, and it’s your job to rescue her! Unfortunately, the wizard just turned you into a jumping bean.

Following the concept of the cute narrative, this platforming iOS title is all about old-school platforming your way to victory through physics puzzles and feats of jumping like only a jumping bean can.

It features 16-bit era graphics, boss fights, and a soundtrack by composer Flashygoodness.

It’s the definition of easy to pick up yet hard to master.

Girls Like Robots

GLR is an Android game about sitting. More precisely, it’s about seating arrangements. It’s almost better if I let you read the game’s description for yourself:

“Navigate an epic tale of love, adventure, outer space and Abraham Lincoln by putting people into chairs next to other people.”

Uh huh.

GLR is developer Popcannibal’s vision of tile based puzzling, put simply. We’ll have to dig deeper to see where the girls and robots come into play though.

Lawnmower Challenge

Lunar Enigma has brought to the table an iOS game they like to call, Lawnmower Challenge. It’s a puzzle game based on…mowing grass. However, you’ll face challenges and obstacles along the way, such as mud puddles, locked gates, trees that need chopping, and…overgrown grass.

I can’t wait to see how they’ve made yard chores fun.

Not Without You

Another puzzle on the ballot for the showcase is Not Without You, an interesting story about woodland creatures called “cryptids” who most work together to solve puzzles and escape the laboratory of Dr. F.W. Nervoso. The game includes a drag-and-drop level editor, allowing users to create and upload their adventures for other users to enjoy.

There’s over 80 puzzles in the game, all claiming to be brain bending.

Spelltower

Spelltower claims to be a word game “for the rest of us.”

Instead of placing your own words like Scrabble or Words with Friends, the goal of Spelltower is to eliminate them from a massive grid, but doing so wisely. As you play, letters rise from the bottom to the top of the screen, and it’s your job to keep them from doing so.

If any make it to the top, you lose. Daunting huh?

Super Crate Box

Finally, we have Super Crate Box, a 16-bit inspired action platformer on iOS that focuses on the golden age of arcade gaming, where high score lists were what really mattered. You’ll be fighting hordes of enemies and collecting weapon crates during your time with the game, all in pursuit of a higher score than your buddies.

The soundtrack will also be exclusively chiptune-filled.

So, what do you guys think? Do any of these fresh, new indie games catch your eye? Let us know in your comments below.
