As it turns out, the page will be making THREE announcements, with the first coming on Monday at 1 Eastern/10 Pacific. From a press release sent out by Valve:
“As Gabe mentioned a few days ago, we will be talking next week about the steps we’re taking to make Steam more accessible on televisions and in the living room. Specifically, we have three announcements to make beginning with the first one on Monday morning.”
So there you go. THREE announcements. They’re all going to pertain to the living room, so it’s probably a good bet that Half-Life 3 isn’t actually involved in any way. Still, it’s fun to dream, isn’t it?
Well, since we know that the Steam Box has GOT to be one of these (seriously, it has to), what are the other two?
Only a few days ago, Valves Gabe Newell seemed to be hinting at an impending announcement regarding that most mysterious of PC gaming set-ups, the Steam Box. And while I’m not sure exactly when this page went up, it looks like Valve is SUPER CEREAL about that announcement coming within the next three days or so.
The page is headed by text that tells us that “The Steam Universe is Expanding in 2014.” If this is indeed for the supposed Steam Box, that blows my theory out of the water of a launch to compete with Sony and Microsoft’s next-gen consoles this fall. Howeve,r that doesn’t mean that an early 2014 release wouldn’t still be plenty competitive.
Anyway, the page also tells us a bit more:
“Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.”
Okay, so, Steam Box, right?
Furthermore, there’s a little countdown that has about 72 hours left as of this writing (three days) and a picture of a little controller with three buttons on it (threeeee buttons) meaning that, yes, THIS IS CONFIRMATION THAT HALF-LIFE 3 IS COMING OUT IN THREE DAYS.
Or, you know, maybe Valve is just trolling us again.
Anyway, it’s all mighty mysterious. 72 hours from right now is 1 p.m. Eastern, 10 a.m. Pacific on Monday. So we’ll know whatever this is in some way then.
For now, begin your crazy speculation! Nobody doesn’t like crazy speculation. What’s that cardboard cat mean? WHY’S HE STARING AT US?
