Over the years, there’ve been more than a few attempts to emulate Joss Whedon’s Firefly TV show in the world of video games, both unofficial and totally official—and so far, we haven’t gotten squat. But at the San Diego Comic Con, going on right now, Fox Digital Entertainment announced that it had teamed with developers QMXi and Spark Plug Games to create Firefly Online, a mobile, cross-platform game that puts gamers in the role of ship captain.
According to a post on Polygon, QMXi’s CEO Andy Gore talked about the game with lots of words that are sure to give Firefly fans major nerd-boners:
“At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures—well, that’s just too shiny for words.”
The game is set to come out for iOS and Android devices in summer 2014, and I have to say, I’m definitely interested. I love me some space-games, and I really enjoyed the show and movie. If this game manages to not suck, it could be a ton of fun. It’s telling, too, that they’re going for mobile rather than PC…maybe the game will be on the simple side? I’m curious to see how this turns out.
Moreover, I’m kind of amazed this exists, but I guess Fox is looking to ride high on Joss Whedon’s recent successes. Would’ve appreciated Firefly not getting canceled, but hey, what are you gonna do?
Anyway, what do you think of this? You can sign up for the beta right here.
