Speaking with The Escapist at GDC, Day Z Designer Dean “Rocket” Hall said that unless Bohemia happens to “fuck up” the PC release of a standalone Day Z, a console release is likely to follow.
“I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it,” Hall said. “Like, I’m not a console gamer, I’m a PC gamer, but I don’t think it necessarily has to hurt things.”
If you’re unfamiliar to the mindset that Hall’s referring to, Day Z is a PC-ass game. It’s extremely difficult and demanding of its players, but also very rewarding. Typically, when moved to console, games are “consolized” or diluted to make them more palatable to large audiences. Hall seems to be acknowledging the concern and stating that Day Z won’t change too much.
Additionally, Hall threw out the PlayStation 4 as a likely candidate for the port.
It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see,” Hall said. “We’ve talked and met with Sony, and they’re very – you know, they’re obviously interested.”
This matches with what we’ve heard from Sony and other indie developers. It’s nice to see the big S try and corral the little guy.
