Saints Row IV Officially Announced

This morning, Dead Island publisher Deep Silver announced that Volition’s Saints Row IV would be headed to current-gen consoles and PC on August 20 in North America, with a worldwide release three days later.

If you’d like to know what kind of insane hijinks and chicanery you’ll be getting up to this time around, here’s the official description from the announcement press release:

“In Saints Row IV, the head honcho of the Saints has been elected to the Presidency of the United States. But the Saints are just getting started. Now the larger-than-life insanity of the Saints series gets a new twist with a catastrophic alien invasion, and the aliens have transported the Saints to a bizarro-Steelport simulation. Wield gargantuan superpowers and fight to free humanity from alien granddaddy Zinyak’s mental grasp. Escape the simulation that’s trapped the Saints crew, or die trying.”

Haha, I just thought of this: United Saints of America! Get it? That second word sounds like that other word. Puns! Anyway.

We’ve known for a while that Saints Row IV was in the works at developer Volition, but obviously things hit a bit of a snag when that company’s publisher-owner, THQ, filed for bankruptcy early this year and was sold off piece-by-piece. Koch Media, the parent company of Deep Silver, swooped in to buy Volition and the rights to publish the Saints Row franchise.

It’s also important to note that the press release was pretty specific about only coming out for current-gen consoles—meaning that anyone hoping for a PS4 or next-Xbox release is probably out of luck. Now, the other question is whether or not “current-gen” includes the Wii U. No word yet, though I suppose we’ll find out more as that late-August release date approaches. Never mind. GameInformer asked Deep Silver if Saints Row IV will hit the Wii U, and the answer was, in a word, “nope.” That settles that!

What do you think of what Deep Silver announced this morning? Does this get your giblets quivering? Do you love to cause Saints-style mayhem, and you’re itching to jump back in? Let us know in the comments.

  1. I just hope they don’t decide to sell this one in parts too.

    • You mean with lots of different DLC that you’ll pay extra for so you can get the full game experience? You might as well stop hoping: that’s pretty much the way video games work now.

  2. When they cancelled Dominatrix and said it’s content would be on SR4, I didn’t thought it would literary BE SR4…

    That’s lazy, but then again, since it’s under a different publisher, might as well be baby steps, so sure, bring SR3 part 2;

    • To be fair, it Saints Row 2 was Saints Row 1 part 2.

Soo… this is Saints Row 3 part 2. im okay with it.

I wish it didnt look exactly the same as sr3 though…

  3. Man I love me some Saints Row really really bad and I have been waiting for this for a while but current gen only? and only like 2 months out from next gen consoles and games? bad move cause I wont be getting it now because why would I blow 60$ for something I dont plan on even looking at again? :(

    • So what you’re saying is that once next-gen console hit store shelves you’re throwing out your 360 and PS3?

Sure, it’s kinda disappointing it won’t be on next gen consoles but come on, the transition will be gradual.

  4. Saints Row looks like it will be very engaging and fun for gamer’s to play…

  5. That was disappointing… In the very least I was expecting it to be on next gen tech to help differentiate from 3. It’s basically Episodes from Liberty City.

  6. Wow, I thought after the SRTT failure, they would go back to what made the first to games good. Instead, they decide to make it even worse. Fuck those developers, I will no longer be supporting either of them!

  7. No big graphical changes…
