Lots of New Gornagraphic Screens from Star Trek
Last night I had some friends over to continue our weekly journey through the Star Trek films, tackling Star Trek III: The Search for Spock this time around. It was pretty good, but easily inferior to Wrath of Khan and one of my favorites, The Voyage Home.
What I’m trying to get at here is that I friggin’ love Star Trek, and my affection for the original series and cast of characters is pretty huge, no matter how ridiculous those episodes from the ‘60s might’ve been.
So that’s why I’m so stoked about the new movie from J.J. Abrams, and the new game from Namco Bandai that ties into it. The game is set between the first film from 2009 and the sequel that’s hitting this summer, and it concerns a revamped enemy from the original series, the Gorn. Only one Gorn ever shows up in the old show, and in only one episode. And, really, it just looks like a dude in a crappy Godzilla suit. But I’m eager to see how the game’s developers have decided to reinterpret the character for the new universe.
Of course, there are concerns. Star Trek isn’t all about running and gunning and shooting bad guys, so I’m hopeful that there’s more to the game than just that kind of combat. The fact that it’s a third-person action/adventure game is a good sign. But on the other hand, if the Gorn are the main enemy, will there be enough variety in who and what you’re fighting? Or will you just be shooting lots and lots of green dudes running around in space? I’m wishing that there are enough different enemy types (and not just Gorn in differently colored armor) to keep things interesting.
Anyway: lots of screens! For sure, they’ve got the look right, and I’m going to stay optimistic. Aliens: Colonial Marines wound up being really disappointing, but it’s entirely possible that this will be a fun, faithful romp through the new Star Trek universe.
Also, I hope this happens:

There was another Gorn in Star Trek Enterprise, “In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II” But very few people would remember that. I had to check the wiki for that.
Also: Enterprise is terrible.
