A post on Polygon reports that Sega’s Phantasy Star Online 2, the sequel to their Dreamcast classic, will be headed to the PlayStation Vita next week in Japan. The sequel was originally announced last summer, and since then it’s been released for the PC in Japan, with North American and European releases on the way sometime this year.

The Vita version will have cross-platform functionality with the PC version, though so far no PlayStation 3 version’s been announced. Nor, it seems, has a North American or European release of Phantasy Star Online 2 been announced either. But we’ll just have to trust that Sony will be bringing Japan’s innovations to this side of the globe as well.

Interestingly, the game will still be free-to-play on the Vita, as it is on the PC. Unless I’m mistaken, that might be the first free-to-play title to hit the handheld. Maybe that’ll be the secret formula to get people interested in the device…? Though, on second thought, no, probably not.

Don’t think so because it lacks the Massive quality of Massive Multiplayer Online, it’s more of a online co-op feature.

So tragic that the world’s greatest handheld, and the one that offers the greatest value, isn’t highly successful. Sony needs to drop its price worldwide and market the hell out of it, then maybe quality standards in the handheld sector may improve. I still can’t believe some people are still playing on 240p screens powered by 4mb of VRAM, the 3DS is horrifyingly bad… kinda single-handedly killed my previously lifelong Nintendo fanaticism. It’s like Sony’s the only company making a stand for quality portable gaming these days, even though it’s not really a sector they own. Tragic.
