Gabe Newell Issues Statement about Valve Layoffs

The other day, news spread that Valve had dismissed a number of employees, though the reasons behind the layoffs (or firings?) has yet to be discovered. Amid speculation and rumor, Valve boss Gabe Newell released a statement to Engadget in response to their inquiries, breaking tradition and commenting directly (if still vaguely) on the recent departures from the company:

“We don’t usually talk about personnel matters for a number of reasons. There seems to be an unusual amount of speculation about some recent changes here, so I thought I’d take the unusual step of addressing them. No, we aren’t canceling any projects. No, we aren’t changing any priorities or projects we’ve been discussing. No, this isn’t about Steam or Linux or hardware or [insert game name here]. We’re not going to discuss why anyone in particular is or isn’t working here.”

Aside from that, the dismissals are still mostly as much of a mystery now as they were the other day. Until someone who’s lost a job starts talking about what went down, we’ll probably still be in the dark.
