Platinum Games Tweets Interest in Darksiders and Vigil
As you’re certainly aware by now, THQ’s been sold off in various bits and pieces as of yesterday’s bankruptcy auction. But some pieces have gone unsold—with Darksiders and its development studio, Vigil, among them.
While Darksiders sales may have been disappointing, it’s well-loved among its fans, and still one of the more recognizable franchises formerly published by THQ, so many are confused that it’s yet to be snapped up by anyone for the bargain prices the Chapter 11 proceedings have revealed. But a post on Kotaku reports that Platinum Games—the developer behind Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and The Wonderful 101—has expressed interest in adding Darksiders to its stable of projects. Platinum’s boss, Atsushi Inaba, Tweeted this yesterday:
THQのスタジオ&IPバラ売りオークションで『DARKSIDERS』売れ残ったってマジか。買いたいなあ…安く…
— 稲葉敦志(Atsushi Inaba) (@PG_inaba) January 24, 2013
Which, as translated by Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft, means “In THQ’s studio and IP selling off auction, Darksiders is unsold? [We] wanna buy it…on the cheap…”
Of course, even if Platinum did rescue the Darksiders franchise from the ruin of THQ, that doesn’t mean that Vigil would be saved as well. On the other hand, yesterday Vigil’s Haydn Dalton was Tweeted at by JP Kellams, a writer and translator at Platinum. Take a look:
@haydndalton hey man. If anyone is interested in working with/at Platinum let me know how to get ahold of you via DM.

Will Vigil become a part of Platinum? At this point, it’s anybody’s guess, and public courtship like this may certainly never lead to anything. However, you never know. This could be the start of a new chapter for the developer and the franchise…

I remember playing Darksiders 1. It struck me as a whole mess of game combinations, ranging from God of War, to DMC, etc. I’ll eventually pick up Darksider’s 2 when I get to it, but I still can’t shake that feeling that the series didn’t have a true identity. And there were no pluses in the story department, either. Still, I’m holding out for a third installment. It seems like it could really get something good going for it.
I’ve found that many game series are their best at the 2nd or 3rd iteration.
(Dead Space, Mass effect, Assassins Creed, Gears of war…)
