Mysterious Square Enix Teaser Appears

ff atb

Some mornings I wake up and take a look at the stories we’re going to try to tackle for day and see something that makes me scratch my head. This morning was one of those mornings. The link was to this Japanese Square Enix Site, and what seems like a reveal planned for Thursday, January 17.

The URL provides some hints, as the end of it says “ff_atb.” For longtime fans of the series, “ATB” can only mean “Active Time Battle,” the combat system introduced in Final Fantasy IV, which broke the tradition of simple, turn-based combat. The silhouettes on the teaser page also seem to have an 8- or 16-bit pixel-art feel to them, suggesting that we’ll be hearing about some kind of classic Final Fantasy remake. After poking around for a few minutes, I see that Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy V have already been redone, while a 3DS version of Final Fantasy VI has been discussed, but not formally announced…

My money’s on a Final Fantasy VI remake. But, also, I’m really tired, and I haven’t had any coffee yet. I’m using this as an excuse for some kind of obvious clue or previous news that I’ve missed that would help me solve this mysterious mystery.

What do you think?

If it’s a new final fantasy tactics ( which it could be) I will Nerdgasm like no nerd had Nerdgasmed before, in fact, I will be excited anyway.

I would just like to say the sprites are the various jobs from what appears to be the FF I remake on the psp…though this may just be when they finally say something on FFX HD

Im gonna have to say ff VI as well. Its simple. Look at the behemoth sprite outlines. They are exactly identical to the ones from VI.

I doubt it’s a simple FF6 re-release. There are eight people in the silhouettes, and no Final Fantasy has had that many in a party. Furthermore while some of the shadows look like Locke, there’s clearly a Final Fantasy 1 black mage in there.

I think it’s some sort of new mobile / social game where you can be any Final Fantasy character and fight Final Fantasy themed monsters. There will probably be some kind of F2P aspect, like you can buy potions with Square Enix funbux to do more than one fight per day.

Instead of announcing new Final Fantasy games, why can’t Square just focus all their attention on Versus 13? It’s been in development since 2006!!! maybe earlier! I don’t want it to be another Duke Nukem Forever.

Jesus Christ, I know, RIGHT?! It seems like SE is bouncing around doing everything EXCEPT what the fans want. Lightning Returns (AKA 13-3)…? Are you serious?
When I heard them make the announcement, I literally felt like smashing my head through a wall… Come E3, we’ll be hearing: “And now… Final Fantasy: Hope’s Sexual Identity Crisis…… 13-4-something-something!! Whooo!!”

As long as they do not repeat FF13, I will be happy. Though that is due to how much I really dislike what they did with that one. FF12 is bad as is.. but 13 was just terrible. I know some people liked it.. and well, that is good for them..
