Some Hats Being Pulled from Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2 is known for its hats – usually for adding them, and doing so in abundance. However, today, Valve announced via its Team Fortress blog that some hats are being retired from the store – and they will never, ever return from said retirement state.
Some of these hats are classics. Some are more recent. And though they’ll all be removed from the store and any future drop crates you might attain, rest assured that any copies you currently own will remain unaffected. You’ll still be able to wear them, trade them, or grind them up to make other hats – you just won’t be able to find them in the store or in any crates you don’t already have in your possession from this point forward.
If an item below exists in a crate you’ve yet to unlock, you can still uncrate it – it just doesn’t have any chance of being above normal quality (as in being a special or unique level hat).
Removed items include:
- Batter’s Helmet
- Soldier’s Stash
- Pyro’s Beanie
- Demoman’s Fro
- Football Helmet
- Mining Light
- Prussian Pickelhaube
- Trophy Belt
- Fancy Fedora
There’s a full FAQ available on the TF blog, so be sure to head there if you carry any hat-related inquiries on your person. Now, if you’ll excuse me… I have some keys to buy and crates to uncrate.

Just a correction, all of these hats are the classic ones. Those being the first set of hats introduced into the game. No other hats apart from these are being removed.
Some (if not all of ‘em) are the hats that comes with buying the class box of equipment, at least it used to come when I played the game, so fairly sure they are not doing that to raise the value of the items for trading.
Call me cynical, but this is a genius move by valve, financially speaking. By removing these hats, they’re creating scarcity, which will drive up the prices on these particular hats that are still in circulation. And what do people pay with? Keys bought wit real money. There are enough hats in the game that the overall economy will hardly be affected, but these few will now generate far more revenue than they would have otherwise. I can only talk about the economics of virtual goods for so long without thinking myself insane, but I’d just like to point out how they pulled a set of armor in Dota 2; that set naturally became worth 10x as many keys. Smart move by a smart company.
Gee… No more hatz… I’m so… distressed…
Yeah its a nice move but I hardly believe it has been done to rise their profits…
I like this to a degree, sure, pulling the hats seems fine, but why remove them? I wouldn’t mind if they just kept it and just started making more weapons over hats honestly. I prefer the things I actually use in the game rather than the normal weapons you start with at times because that is how I prefer to fight in the game. Perhaps it may make way for more money for Valve but I just for some reason don’t like seeing them pulled. I guess because since it ain’t broke, don’t fix it because they aren’t going to be a big problem if kept around, but just adding less hats and more weapons may be a better way to go than this. Just balance out these things perhaps so people that aren’t hat crazy like I am can at least have a bit of uniqueness to my character, but different weapons to try new ways to end the enemy. For now, I want to see what will happen, what will be said, what will go through, etc., and see if this was a good, or bad move or even both. Best of luck Valve and TF2 community if you will miss this hats…

As somebody in the TF2 community of trading, i can see that soon these items (as soon as they are out of circulation) will be worth alot more then they already are, such as the prussian, it is worth .33 ref for a uncraft (store) and 1.33 for a clean (drop) one, but i believe soon the value will triple for them, so its a smart move (ish)
No one’s going to sell them. Valve is just making a statement I think we all understand…
