After a small advertisement for it ended up in a digital strategy guide for Borderlands 2, 2K Games and Gearbox Software have come out and spilled the beans on their considerably-secretive iOS project, Borderlands Legends. The game is a strategic action RPG built for iOS devices and will release on October 31 for $4.99 and $6.99 on the iPhone and iPad respectively. Predictably, that extra $2 for the iPad version gets you higher-resolution visuals and a potentially more optimized interface.

Similarly to how Borderlands and Borderlands 2 blended the FPS and RPG genres quite effectively, such is Gearbox’s plan for Borderlands Legends, with the exception being the swapping of FPS for Action RPG and RPG for strategy. From what we’ve seen of the screenshots released so far, the game takes on an isometric viewpoint, not far off-base in comparison to something like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and focuses on much of the same content that’s in Borderlands, but from a new, not-quite-as-first-person perspective.

Entertainment Weekly had the opportunity to spend some time with the game recently, so it seems, and this is what they thought:

“Behind the big guns of Brick, Lilith, Mordecai, and Roland, fans of the franchise will be treated to a fresh take on the series’ signature shoot-and-loot formula.”

Gearbox claims it has “intuitive, touch-based commands and slick UI,” as well as the inventory and skill tree systems that “gamers already love”. It comes out next week, so we’ll see soon enough just how much of our time waiting at the bus stop or dentist’s office it’ll consume.
