New Footage of Notch’s Space Game

Over the last few months, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has been working on a new game that takes place in the far future, in space, and is called 0x10c. A post on CVG today offers up the above footage, apparently uploaded by Notch, and showing off the progress on the game so far.

As you can see, there’s a lot of walking, shooting of a ray gun (at nothing), lighting effects…simply put, it’s definitely still a work in progress. Says Notch’s description, “physics, bobbing, and guns.”

Presumably, what we’re seeing is a part of the spaceship that the action will take place on, probably a cargo hold or something. There’s a little computer terminal on one of the walls, and a light bulb hanging precariously from the ceiling that reacts when the game avatar shoots his ray gun at it. So physics-wise, things are happening. But Firefly? Not just yet—but I’m eager to see what else comes of this project.

The post says that Notch is looking to include “engineering, mining, trading and looting, an advanced economy system, a fully working computer system and…duct tape.”

In addition, the plan for this game’s development will mirror that of Minecraft, in that an early build of the game will be made available to players who can help him shape the game as it progresses. Interested? I know I am.

I want this to not turn into Minecraft 2.0. Not because I don’t like MC, but because it’s a unique game that’s been developed well, has many current players, a large community, and the developer of MC would not want to create a game that’s a competitor to MC. Especially since there can’t really be a MC2, since it’s all updated constantly. I’d like to see more development in the engineering and economy sections of this game. MC had a very addictive mining and crafting system, so if Notch and the rest at Mojang can recreate that magic with those mechanics, this game will be super addictive and, therefore, successful.

There’s a subtle difference in mining with a pickaxe and mining with a spaceship. I think the two games won’t have much similarities, and I’m definitely looking forward to coding for my own on-board computer :D As far as crafting goes, resource management and using resources for upgrades are rather old mechanics that work in many game genre’s, so it’s not really Minecraft’s thing.
I’m just glad that the big hurdles considering the engine are being crossed so they can finally get to the fun stuff :D

Is 8 bit the only style Notch knows how to do?
