Notch Slams Windows 8 Again
On Twitter today, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson once again publicly denounced Microsoft’s forthcoming operating system, Windows 8. Apparently, Microsoft was looking for Notch’s help in getting Minecraft “certified” to run on Windows 8. Here’s what he had to say:
Got an email from microsoft, wanting to help “certify” minecraft for win 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the pc as an open platform.

Shortly thereafter, he followed up with this:
I’d rather have minecraft not run on win 8 at all than to play along. Maybe we can convince a few people not to switch to win 8 that way..

This isn’t the first time Notch has made public statements against Windows 8. Last month, he talked about the problems game developers face with the impending release of Windows 8 during an interview on Reddit. And those statements were made in the wake of Valve’s Gabe Newell saying much the same thing—essentially, the platform will supposedly limit the PC platforms openness, making the work of software developers more difficult.
But on the other hand…Surface! So, you know, there’s that.

I still don’t see the problem, unless all software is forced to go through Microsoft’s Marketplace.
Otherwise… I really don’t see the problem. Yet.
It’s difficult to explain, but if you’re like me and like to mod games (sometimes not with official tools), this will be a nightmare.
And I’m pretty sure that Microsoft will start making everything new as Win8 only, like what they’ve been doing with 7.
As long as Windows 8 runs java it really shouldn’t be a problem. I’ve tried the beta version of Windows 8 though – and it’s kinda awful. But it did work properly, and from a technical standpoint didn’t experience any problems. The design, however, is quite frankly terrible, and we need someone to make a good alternative to what Microsoft is doing to Windows. Linux to me is far too complicated and not well supported, and Macs are essentially what Microsoft is trying to turn Windows into – a very restrictive platform, which I don’t like at all.
@johnxfire- The problem with Windows 8 is that everything is buried under a crap desktop designed off of the Windows Phone layout. The layout is fine for mobile devices and tablets, but is horrible for PC’s. The layout causes problems for devs because they have to create an un-godly amount of program links to settings and lay overs, all of which are completely pointless when you can just double click the icon on a standard desktop.
There’s no reason to make them do more work for the same price.
Notch and Gabe always bashing someone.
Buy your copy of Windows 8 for $40 and turn back into Windows 7 with Classic Shell. It is FOSS and really helps to make Windows 8 more usable for people by giving back the Start menu.
Just sayin’ I never had a problem with MC on Windows 8 aside from having to revert my graphics drivers to the win 7 ones, as the win 8 ones didn’t work.
So programmers have to cerify their stuff with MS before they can be released on Windows 8? Christ, it’s worse than I thought
I love windows 7, i see no reason to change. Unless they brought a lot more stuff to the board, but I doubt it.
>Run Java in compatibility mode
