No Wii U Pre-Orders at Amazon?

A post on Joystiq today reports that Amazon’s being pretty cagey about whether or not Nintendo’s forthcoming Wii U console will be available for pre-order on their site. The post notes that the 3DS and 3DS XL aren’t available through Amazon itself (though you can buy it on the site via Amazon’s third-party sellers), and that the company sent an automated message regarding Nintendo’s new system:

“Dear Amazon.com Customer, Thank for you signing up to be notified when the Wii U is available. Unfortunately the Wii U console is not available at Amazon.com at this time but please check back in the future, as availability may change. We do have the latest Wii U games and accessories available now so check them out. Thank you for shopping with Amazon Video Games.”

Apparently Amazon and Nintendo aren’t getting along quite so well. Meanwhile, my theory that there was an exclusive pre-order deal between the game-maker and GameStop is blown out of the water, since Best Buy is now offering pre-orders on the console.

And here I am with all these Amazon gift certificates. Dammit.

So what gives? It would seem that Amazon has little to no intention to carry the system, which I imagine is a move detrimental to their business plan. Chances are this is problem is coming from Nintendo’s end–but that’s all speculation on my part. Any thoughts on this? Does this change your buying plans?
