Obsidian is Counting Down…
After two days of teasing the gaming world with the mysterious number four, Obsidian’s homepage has changed it up, now with the number four, and this bit of flavor text (you know, the stuff they have at the bottom of your Magic cards):
“The book unread is unwritten. The reason we don’t explain it is the reason we use it. Its power is in its mystery. That is the Leaden Key, in part, in whole. Is it clear?”
“Digging for truth buries the seeker.”
And the mystery doesn’t stop there. The page’s source offers this chunk of fantasy novel fodder:
“Two centuries ago, your divine champion told the people of Dyrwood to grovel at his feet. If you’ve come on pilgrimage to the blasted crater that was our reply, Godhammer Citadel is *that* way.”
What the heck, you guys.
When we initially reported the teaser two days ago, we speculated that the four might signal Dungeon Siege 4. Now that the number’s been changed to three, that would seem to take the air out of that idea. A post on Eurogamer dissects some of the discussions being had on Obsidian’s Project X forums:
“Speculation on the official Project X forum seemed to rule out the Wheel of Time game Obsidian was once drafted by IP owner Red Eagle to help with. Wheel of Time has specific names and locations, and these don’t appear to be linked to them. […]
Could this be a completely new IP? Obsidian’s made a business out of developing sequels for other people’s IP—Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Dungeon Siege 4. It’s own original IP, modern day spy RPG Alpha Protocol, had nice ideas but fell short in terms of quality and sales.”
What do you think, Machinimen and Machiniwomen? Keep guessing…chances are pretty good we’ll have a number two and some more Magic card text to discuss by Friday.

If you go onto Obsidian.net, Entry 2 is already up.
“I recognize your pain. Your kind must learn it comes from straining against the turning of the world. It spins thus. You cannot stop it. One day, you will wake up. You will stop pulling. The pain will be gone. Until then, all your waking hours are suffering.”
well now we know its counting down…
