Wing Commander’s Chris Roberts Coming Back to Video Games

One of my earliest and most intense gaming experiences was with the Wing Commander series for PC. Those games are definitely why I get a total nerd-on for any games that put you in the cockpit of a space-fighter. It’s why I secretly (not-so-secretly) hope for an alien invasion, so we can capture a downed spaceship, reverse engineer it, and start our own space navy, which I will join (and promptly get killed in).

ANYWAY, a post on Joystiq today reveals that the man behind those games, Chris Roberts, is ending his decade-long hiatus from video games, and is heralding his return with a brand new website. Entering in the access code (think Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) gets you a letter from Roberts inviting you to sign up for notifications of whatever he’s got up his sleeve. It definitely seems to have something to do with space ships, though, and that is awesome. So I’m signing up.

The first big reveal will happen at 10 a.m. Eastern (7 a.m. Pacific) on October 10. 10.10.10…looks a lot like binary code to me. INTERESTING.

If you do sign up, you can check out all the different bits and pieces the site has to offer, including the “Time Capsule” tab that offers up a little story by way of news dispatches from the years 2075 and 2113. I can’t wait.

Now if only we could make Carmack and Romero be friends again, a new golden age in gaming would arise.
