Terraria Coming to XBLA and PSN, PC Players Apparently Furious
Re-Logic, the studio behind PC-hit Terraria, has announced that their dungeon-exploration and crafting game will soon be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network, and not to mention boasting all-new content. Sure, console gamers are likely to be ecstatic at the news, but dedicated PC players – well, they’re right-ornery about the whole ordeal.
As Destructoid so cleverly discovered when parsing through the many lines of Facebook comments on the developer’s post, much of the consumer feedback was primarily unbridled fury, something you likely don’t expect or hope for as a developer when you announce that your project will now be playable by more people in more places.
Here are some of my current personal favorites from the lot:
“know what? this basically proves Red as a money grubbing whore. first you say you want to abandon the project, because you felt it was UNFINISHED. and NOW you want us to buy the shit again? two words: FUCK THAT! and NO i’m not buying Starbound either…” – Ricky Gervais (Probably not the real one, but that’s Facebook for you)
“Wow. Seriously? You abandon the PC game to release THIS. This confirms my suspicion that you guys are just in it for the money now.” – Courtney
“I HOPE YOUR CONSOLES CATCH FIRE AS SOON AS YOU PUT TERRARIA IN!” – Anemicni Oliver
“OH God ! You are copying this Idea from Mojang. -.- First they make a Xbox version and then you copy instead of satisfy the PC Gamers -.-” – Marco
“HAHAHAHA consoles.” – Rowen
Let’s talk for a moment about what these pleasant folks have right, and, more importantly, what these folks have incorrect.
These people are (presumably) customers. They (presumably) purchased this game on the PC with the idea in mind that the developer was going to supply them with a fun game that boasts content equal to the price they paid. Given that I’ve played hours and hours of Terraria, and even more so how much there truly is to uncover and accomplish in that game, not to mention the hats (my Lord the hats), there really is no shortage of content to be found.
Should these consumers be upset that new content is coming to consoles? If it’s exclusive content, then yes, perhaps they do have some reason to be upset – especially if they’ve poured a lot into that online community.
However, does wanting to make more money on a successful game make these independent developers “money grubbing whores”? From my understanding of how a business works (and the fact that we, as humans, like money), there are plenty of “money grubbing whores” out there. What is so upsetting about a game being on other platforms? Are you upset that you can play Doom on an iPad? Does it piss you off that you can purchase a Sonic The Hedgehog game on Xbox Live Arcade instead of having to drag out your Sega platform of choice?
Does this new console release indicate that Re-Logic is going to abandon the PC release of Terraria all-together? Well, it most certainly could, but the team has yet to clarify any of that officially (not since February), and I doubt they (or any developer) ever would. They’ve yet to even state that the new content is console-exclusive; it could very well make its way to PC at launch or shortly after.
However, to the credit of those upset, the owner of Re-Logic and creator of the game has stated in the past that he has “moved on’ from the game to focus on aspects of his personal life like his wife and son. So, what does this mean? Does this mean that he and his team are working on the game again, despite his past statements? If that’s truly the case (and the port isn’t being handled by a side company), then he may soon retract his idea to move on from post-launch development on the game.
When the time comes that Re-Logic officially abandons the Terraria PC community and focuses wholeheartedly on the XBLA and PSN scenes, then you, the apparently Terraria-loving consumer, have reason to be genuinely upset. Until that day, when questions are answered, do you really have no reason to be this level of upset? And by you, I mean the folks in the quotations above. However, it’s likely that you (the reader) are an informed, respectable, opinionated human being who refuses to post in caps just because you can, and would much rather place your comments ever-so-calmly in the comments below.

And when I used the phrase “genuinely upset” above, I wasn’t referring to any of the quotations as an example. That’s not being genuine, that’s being a whiny baby.
That said, we’ll keep tabs on Re-Logic to see what they have up their sleeves for Terraria as a whole. G’day folks!

I like how any attempt to monetize a product that took time, effort, and, oh yeah, money, is decried as an attempt at being a money grubbing whore.
“You’re just in it for the money!”
As opposed to WHAT exactly? Like an independent video game developer wants to make games for free and starve forever? People are ridiculous.
My boss is like that. “Show up, do your work, and don’t ask about your pay check”, what the hell do people think we work for? For shit’s and giggles? We kinda live in a capitalist societie, money is unfortunately the driving force.
From an entire perfect world view, your are right, but thing is, Red made a post on Terraria forums last year basically saying he was sick of the game and wanted to move on into new projects using what he learned from it, the exact same thing he did a year before when he shut down his previous project on bullshit grounds to move to terraria, and while personally, I don’t really care about this move, if anything, down the line any new content he makes for the game might be ported and the game resurrected on pcs, I can see why others would feel betrayed.
It is a very dubious move, no matter how you spin it.
I’ll admit, I was hoping for a cooler announcement when they teased it yesterday. Sure wasn’t expecting a console release, I don’t even know how that will work. I would love for more expansions to come to PC and I really hope the content isn’t console exclusive. But to be this mad at Re-logic is just ridiculous. There are mods for a reason people lol and that reason is new fresh content ^-^
FEEL THE HATRED INSIDE YOU, ELITISTS.
pc players are suck di*k’s, Its just a game.
I’m upset that they haven’t announced any additional content for the PC version, but I’m not going to rip on a gaming company for expanding their product to sell their game on more than one market. Hell, that’s the kind of thing that helps bring out additional content. The vast majority of people on the internet over-react because they can. Then again, I still hate the Mass Effect 3 ending…
Can we take a look at “the orange box” and maybe hope ReLogic does something like valve did? I’m sure there were many folks up in arms when that was announced, but it [the orange box]was left like an abandoned child on a river bank, only to be raised up as a leader BACK on the PC….
I suppose when the mass of your consumers are pre- or in the middle of puberty these lashings should be expected, at least the industry should probably learn to expect this type of behavior from their consumers.
But what is the major concern here, that the devs will abandon their PC community? They’ll definitely re-direct some resources away, but the PC is obviously a better platform for gaming if you consider the modification possibilities. (in my mind anyways, and btw “opinions are like assholes, everyone’s got one, and they all stink!”)
All in all teenages are hysterical, teenages are the majority consumers of video games and they’re gonna freak out when they don’t understand something, so get used to it.
As far as more mature gamers, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear (or read) similar comments, but that’s they’re own deal… Most of us will send a positive thought towards the devs and wish them luck on their new endeavors.
If they make more money, they’ll make more games….
Well said. Good on ya.
While I do agree with you for the majority of this I do somewhat disagree that ALL teenagers are like that. I’m 15 and while I do have some angsty moments, your comment makes it look as though we are like this all the time. I consider myself to be surprisingly mature when it comes to gaming at least and I just thought I would point out what I believe to be either an error in judgement or a poor use of words.
Far out PC gamers having it come to XBLA and PSN (SEN) won’t effect your PC version of the game so just shut it.
I can understand the issue here though people are overreacting. To make this right the developper needs to make the content available and also fix the issues with the game. From the sounds of these comments here and from destructoid I understand why people are make, when you have a developer decide to stop work on the title only to hint and then drive up hype and add additional content for a console release with no word on the PC community who were basically used as paying beta testers then I can understand the anger here. Time will tell if they company makes good and makes things equal regarding the PC community who helped build him up in the first place.
Lastly ademir and tooley, Play a game on a PC, and you’ll find that consoles pale only because they are limited in how you can play the game. The only one who can trump this is the rumored valve box, it would be interesting to see how valve plays the field. But to assume that PC players are all elitists is the same as assuming the console players are all blind fanboys meaning that both ends are wrong about each other but oh well.
Well I can understand why many are upset, and actually the developer HAS stopped working on Terraria for PC, unfortunately. But this does not mean the consoles will be given any special treatment. Indie gaming traditionally routes for the PC and it will stay that way for a very long time.
I don’t see why PC gamers are making a stink over this. I’m a PC gamer first and a console gamer second, but I’m happy this game is coming to the PS3. I’m currently dealing with an injury that is going to have to be fixed with surgery and in the meantime, I can’t enjoy sitting at my PC desk much because of the pain. Currently I’ve been substituting Junk Jack on the iPad, which is a pretty decent clone of Terraria, but I’m looking forward to being able to play the original game on my TV via PS3. This attitude that many gamers seem to have that the universe centers around them is giving gamers a bad name.
