Damien Kieken, a game director with Ubisoft working on Assassin’s Creed III, had a conversation with CVG that was published over the weekend. The interview offered up more details about the multiplayer goodness the game will feature when it’s released this fall. Apparently the multiplayer content will spring from the idea that Abstergo, the modern front for the Templar Order in Assassin’s Creed lore, has made the Animus memory machine into a consumer product, allowing ordinary people to “relive the past in HD.”

Said Kieken:

“Abstergo Entertainment will give you insights on the company’s future initiatives by granting you access to files and information on products that will soon hit the market. As you progress in the game and level up your character, you access these files and videos. Every month you’ll have new challenges to unlock new content that will continue the storyline throughout the year.”

Apparently the storyline that unfolds in the multiplayer campaign will run parallel to the one in the main campaign that features Desmond reliving the life of his ancestor, Connor. Kieken says that this could have some actual impact on the main storyline, since the multiplayer story takes place in the same time period as Desmond’s:

“What are the real motivations behind Abstergo’s sudden initiative to release such a revolutionary product to the public? A product that is redefining the way we’re thinking, the way we’re living…”

The post also explains how multiplayer’s “Wolfpack” mode will work, pitting 2-4 cooperative players against AI targets, who they have to take out before time runs out. Kieken and his team found ways to keep the computer-controlled opponents unpredictable, and to keep players on their toes:

“Some are cowards and will try to run away when they spot you, others are fighters and will stun you and run away. Some are almost blind; others will spot you quickly when you’re on their tail.”

Can’t wait for this thing.
