OUYA to Support Four Controllers
With a little over 12 hours to go on their Kickstarter campaign as of this writing—and roughly $7.8 million in pledged funds—the OUYA project announced today that their Android-powered console will offer support for up to four controllers.
“After all, what’s the point of playing in the living room if the other folks on the couch can’t join in?” says the page update. It also explains that backers who pledged $99 for a console can add another $90 to receive three extra controllers when the console is scheduled to ship in March.
Not only that, the update reveals that video game giant Namco Bandai is currently conducting active discussions with the OUYA folks about games for the new platform.
Here’s the word from Namco Bandai’s VP of marketing, Carlson Choi, as posted on the Kickstarter page:
“NAMCO BANDAI Games and OUYA are currently in active discussions to bring some of the world’s biggest gaming properties to the exciting new open gaming platform. NAMCO BANDAI brings with it a rich history of iconic gaming franchises, from classics like PAC-MAN and GALAGA, to seminal franchises like TEKKEN and Ridge Racer, and we’re excited to explore how we can work with OUYA to bring some great titles to the forthcoming console.”
OUYA’s Kickstarter page urges fans to head over to Namco Bandai’s Facebook page to vote for what games they’d like to see on the console.
To me, this is all pretty exciting. And with only half a day left before the Kickstarter drive closes, I’m more interested in pre-ordering a console than ever. Sadly, even at the low-low cost of a hundred bucks, I’m still broke as a joke at the moment, and can’t really afford it. But knowing that they’ve got millions of bucks to play with, it seems more or less assured that the OUYA will certainly deliver something this March. Whether or not it’ll be the revolution its makers hope for remains to be seen…but I’m a little sad I won’t be able to get in on the ground floor after all…
