Bad news for all us Star Trek fans—Gameforge has canceled its in-development MMO, Star Trek: Infinite Space as of today. Said a statement from the German game publisher:

“Since autumn 2011 we made many efforts to find a publishing and marketing partner for Star Trek: Infinite Space. Unfortunately, our efforts were not successful. So we have decided with a heavy heart to finally abandon the project Star Trek: Infinite Space. The discontinuation is very regrettable. Unfortunately it happens from time to time that a good concept for a game cannot be implemented as originally planned.”

What a goddamn bummer. I guess it’s hard to find financial and creative help for a game based on a universe that, y’know, kind of doesn’t exist anymore (at least not in the minds of Paramount, I assume, since the series was rebooted in J.J. Abrams’s movie).

While I hadn’t gotten the chance to play the game at all, Lawrence’s preview from last September definitely got my Trek senses tingling.

Damn the Prophets. I blame the Cardassians.

At least there is still hope with the Namco Bandai version.

What do you mean the universe doesn’t exist anymore? The alpha timeline wasn’t destroyed in Abrams movie, the story was just set in the offshoot that was made. The alpha timeline did keep going, and at least in the minds of Memory-Alpha the Star Trek wiki, Star Trek Online’s overall story is canon.
