Jay Z and Take-Two Team Up for NBA 2K13 for Some Reason

Today Take-Two Interactive published a press release to announce that they’ve tapped hip-hop mogul Jay Z to serve as executive producer of NBA 2K13. The decision is likely based on Jay Z’s extensive professional basketball experi—wait, what? Oh. He’s never played professional basketball.

Well, I’m sure that the position is being awarded because of all the years that Jay-Z spent working in the video game indust—wha? Uh, oh yeah. So, Jay Z’s never worked on a video game before.

Huh.

Hm.

Here’s what Jay Z said about the deal:

“This has been a unique opportunity to collaborate with 2K Sports and be a part of one of the best sports video games in history. NBA 2K13 will be the next evolution in sports and basketball culture, and I’m ready to usher in the new era of the franchise.”

Jason Argent, VP of marketing for 2K sports, offered his two cents:

“We aren’t content with just being the best, and we will continue to grow the NBA 2K franchise into one of today’s premier entertainment experiences. JAY Z’s role in NBA 2K13 represents a unique fusion of basketball, music, art, and entertainment, and illustrates the evolution of NBA 2K into something much bigger than simply the best basketball video game series ever made.”

All kidding aside, Jay Z is part-owner of the Brooklyn Nets, and helped design their logo—though doesn’t that position almost make his executive producer role something of a conflict of interest? Well, anyway, the press release also explains that Mr. Z will be curating the 24-song soundtrack for the game, featuring—hey!—six Jay Z songs. What are the odds?

Watch out for Jay Z Presents: NBA 2K13 – The Jay Z Special Edition on October 2 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PSP (no Vita?!), Wii, and PC. Apparently a Wii U version will be hitting during the holidays. I’m sure you can’t wait to get your copy on Christmas Day. Make that Christmas JAY…Z.
