Gamer Beats Portal in 8 Minutes, Sets New Speed Run Record

By Landon Robinson | 26 July 2012 | 5 Comments

I’m a big fan of video game speed runs. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, speed runs are simply a player’s attempt to complete a game from beginning to end in as little time as possible. Simple games like Super Mario Bros. and the original Legend of Zelda are popular simple runs, but larger games like Fallout 3 have also seen time in the spotlight.

For your enjoyment today, I offer up a speed run through Valve’s Portal – done in just over 8 minutes. Smashing the original record set at just over ten minutes, this run by SourceRuns was completed using no fancy glitches – only superior whit and time management.

“To be SDA legal we have done our run without using scripts/cheats/hacks for any portion of the run. This run first started after the discovery of a new glitch, which snowballed into a whirlwind of discoveries of new tricks, skips, and glitches.

We started running chambers in April, took a brief hiatus, and then resumed work in late June. The bulk of the run was completed in about 2 weeks time,” said SourceRuns to PC Gamer.

I wasn’t even aware you could skip running backwards that quickly! Hot diggity.

Yeah right “no fancy glitches”.. he glitched the hell out of the game! It was nicely done though.

They said that they used glitches, but that they didn’t use scripts, cheats, or hacks.
