Brand New $99 Video Game Console ‘OUYA’ Being Kickstarted Right Now

By Landon Robinson | 10 July 2012 | 6 Comments

Just last weekend rumors began to surface surrounding a new video game console in the works by a company called OUYA. It was reportedly their hope to make a console that revolutionizes the way games are played on the television — both AAA and indie titles alike.

As it turns out, the rumors are true – and the project is available for you to fund right now on Kickstarter with your very own money. As of press time, interestingly enough, OUYA has already hit over $500,000 in funding towards their $950,000 goal.

Through crowd-funding, OUYA hopes to bring their $99 Android-based console of the same name to the retail marketplace, sporting robust features like an open-development marketplace, free-to-play games, and most of all, complete and total ability to hack the console for those with a taste for hardware modification.

Since the system is based on Android software, any and all applications that developers want to make (be they games or useful apps) will be 100% compatible with OUYA. Video games, of course, are the main focus – and they’ve pointed out that anything from indie game startups to full triple-A titles will be made available.

A system prototype has already been created and has the following specs:

  • Tegra3 quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal flash storage
  • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth LE 4.0
  • USB 2.0 (one)
  • Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
  • Android 4.0

You can check out the video above or hit the link here to check out their Kickstarter page. You have 29 days to throw money at their faces.

As for more in-depth information on the company’s plan for the console, we’ve reached out to OUYA for extra detail – we’ll update you when we get an answer.

really your giving money to a person to develop a console what your phone can already do also there are no games devs who are solely going to develop games for it. And every game is going to have to add support for it. Overall a 99$ machine less powerful than a wii and will only play angry birds

You’re right about the Ouya being on par with a (fairly beefy) phone, but that hardware is leagues beyond the Wii.

That said, it’ll probably get Wii caliber games.

Doesn’t this do something that my computer already does better?

Yes, but you see, not everyone has a good computer. A $99 console far exceeds the cost of a $400+ computer/gaming console.

Seriously… Computers are getting better and less expensive. To me, this seems a tad too late. The Atrix (android mobile phone) has an HDMI port that can be hooked up to a television and can be docked and used as a bare bones pc-substitute. We’ll just have to wait and see, I suppose.
