History of Sonic Speeding to Bookshelves
It’s funny—when I was a kid in the ‘90s, the rivalry between Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario was pretty intense. Mario was old—and Sonic was fast and cool. Look at all the ‘tude! ‘TUDE IS IMPORTANT IN A VIDEO GAME MASCOT!
Of course, looking back now, it’s pretty easy to see who won the “mascot wars” or whatever. Sonic’s games have been pretty lousy for the last several years, while almost every single one of Mario’s new adventures has been a hit.
Regardless, Sonic still has plenty of fans—and to take advantage of their love, Sega has teamed up with French publisher Pix’n Love, a company that specializes in video game books, and UDON, to bring it to the States. The 300 page hardcover has an MSRP of $49.99, and offers information and art on every Sonic game from the character’s 21 year history. It’s set to be released in September, and much like the Marvel vs. Capcom book that we wrote about a short while ago, this is likely for hardcore fans only.
Though, Google leads me to believe that hardcore Sonic fans aren’t really in short supply. Expect this thing to climb the NYT Best Sellers list pretty easily.
If you haven’t yet already, check out the gallery of images from the book at the top of the post. That’s a lot of hedgehog.

Big the Cat is fantastic, you shut your mouth.
I’ll buy this book though, love Sonic.
That’s just the kind of thing a young whippersnapper born in ’92 WOULD say. Big the Cat is an abomination against God.
That’s old man talk. Let me get your cane, you look tired.
Hand me that bottle of stool softener first.
As far as I’m concerned, Big the Cat got flattened by a semi truck on the intro stage to Sonic Adventure 2.
