Nintendo Holding Online Press Conference Tonight

Nintendo says that a new Nintendo Direct video segment will air tonight at midnight, East Coast time (9 p.m. Pacific) to announce…things…

What could the things be? Perhaps stuff that couldn’t make it into their underwhelming E3 press conference? Maybe some new, more interesting games? The fact that the conference seems to be based in Japan leads me to believe that it might actually be something interesting and relatively important. But you never know.

The press release sent out by Nintendo says that the video will be “about Nintendo 3DS, Wii and Nintendo DS products.” That means that the company’s new console, the Wii U, is basically being ignored. That’s fine, I guess—or it would be fine if there weren’t so many unanswered questions about it, like its price and release date.

The only thing I can think of that would justify a sudden, spur-of-the-moment conference like this would be something big, though. A few weeks ago, just before E3 happened, there were reports and rumors that Nintendo would be unveiling a new version of the 3DS hardware that was bigger and featured a second analog pad…and that announcement never happened. So, if I’m a betting man, I’m betting that they’ll be announcing it tonight.

Of course, this’ll make the third or fourth “big announcement thing” that Nintendo’s holding where we’ve had news of such a 3DS upgrade. And it still hasn’t materialized. So, you know, it’s probably just some games or whatever. Maybe Wario will be in them.

Check out Nintendo Direct tonight at midnight, Eastern.

Nintendo, you’ve got a console launching this year — why is not all of your time and energy allocated to getting people amped about it?

An excellent question! Lawrence has pointed out in the past that companies are generally making decisions for reasons that we may not understand–decisions made in committees and based on research and sound business practices.

That said, it still seems like a massively boneheaded move to not be shoving the Wii U up our asses at every turn. It’s only a few months away from release. Shouldn’t there be fucking ads on TV and in-store demos?

I’m going to bet that they don’t announce the 3DS XL tonight. The timing feels too…off.

But then again, here we are — post-E3 and nearly as clueless about the Wii U as we were going in (not counting the new, not so exciting knowledge of in-development third-party titles of course).

It’s not at all what we expected, so they might as well drop this new hardware announcement on our plates tonight while they’re focused on their “research-based” plan of action.

I highly doubt they will be showing off a 3DS redesign because I read an article saying that Shigeru Miyamoto was happy with the current design of the 3DS and that he saw no reason for a redesign at the moment.
