At Long Last: Australia Approves R18+ Video Game Rating
The Australian federal parliament has finally passed into law the new R18+ video game rating classification, meaning that Australians now have the ability to legally buy games designed for people over 15 years old. Good, good — it’s been a long time coming.
The R18+ rating is equivalent to the ESRB’s “M” rating in the US and the PEGI 18 in Europe. This is a refreshing change of pace for Australians, who previously had to deal with the highest rating being MA15+ — a rating that very much restricted a number of violent games and their content.
Our Australian readers/viewers out there have likely expressed their frustrations in the past about the political mess and quarreling surrounding the country’s ridiculous video game rating system. No worries my friends, your pain and suffering is no more – now go play some Grand Theft Auto.
