Steam Wallet Displays Pop up at GameStop (Updated: Totally True)
Update
According to the same post over on Joystiq, GameStop is indeed selling Steam gift vouchers — starting today. As the pictures indicate, they’ll be available in $20 and $50 variations.
Original Article
A post on Joystiq indicates that the rumors from last week are coming to fruition, in that a picture from an “anonymous tipster” reveals a GameStop store display featuring The Steam Wallet — $20 and $50 gift cards for Valve’s PC gaming platform, Steam.
The above image (courtesy of Joystiq and their tipster friend) adds weight to the strikingly similar images sent to Kotaku early last week.
Until official confirmations have been made, we’ll leave it up to you to decide if it’s real or not. Given it is true, feel free to get excited any time about having to make a trip to the store to make an online, 100% digital purchase.
As pointed out when the rumors first came into play (and assuming they’re true), selling competitor gift vouchers would be an odd and interesting, but somewhat intelligent move for GameStop – a company that tried to set up its own digital gaming service in years past, but found little success.
If you can’t beat em’, at least make a little overhead cash selling their stuff.
Well, I’m off to my local GameStop to see if a similar Steam-related setup is on display. You know, for science.
Journalism something or other.

It be great if this could reach the uk before June 20th. Since my birthday is june 25th, make my birthday all the sweeter
more than likely a test market scenario, company’s do a test market scenario with advertising to see how profitable something is, then if its profitable enough they make it common in all stores. More than likely it will takes 3 to 4 months(one quarter) to get the results from selling steam cards in their stores, if the results look promising then bang the cards will be forceshipped to every store.
Point being this process takes time and in the video game world 4 months is a year
I’m in the middle of bum f**k nowhere Arkansas and I saw this very display when I was heading over to Gamestop to pay off m Diablo III preorder for the midnight release. Its indeed a fact and I imagine here to stay as a regular selling item.
