Redbox Kiosks Only Renting Out Disc 1 of Max Payne 3 on Xbox 360
The ever-popular Blockbuster bankrupting video game and DVD rental kiosk Redbox will only be renting out the first of two Max Payne 3 discs when the game becomes available next week. This only applies to the Xbox 360 version, as the PlayStation 3 release is available on one Blu-Ray disc.
As Redbox’s Max Payne 3 product description boldly declares: “ONLY DISC 1 AVAILABLE. DISC 1 INCLUDES THE FIRST HALF OF THE SINGLE PLAYER GAME AND THE MULTIPLAYER PORTION OF THE GAME.”
As you may have encountered with previous Redbox rental experiences, the company has a strict policy about multi-disc rentals. A company spokesperson told The Consumerist that the reasoning behind offering only one disc was simply logistical:
“Redbox kiosks are only equipped to rent out one disc per rental fee.
Since customer feedback has told us that many of our game customers like to test out titles before they buy them, we’ve decided to offer Disc 1 of Max Payne 3 for Xbox 360 so that renters can try it out for a low daily rate.
Disc 1 contains the entire online multiplayer mode and the first half of the extremely substantial single-player game. We think that’s a great deal for just a couple of dollars a day, and we’re excited to offer it! We’ve added a message on the website and on kiosk screens to let renters know about the limited game-playing.”
If you want to play the other half of the single player story and access additional content, you’ll have to purchase the game – Redbox has no plans to offer the second disc as a separate rental.
That would just make too much sense apparently.
Well, there goes my weekend – I wonder if there’s any Hollywood Movie or Blockbuster stores around here…
