Another Kickstarter Photo Finish: Republique Makes Funding Goal
The other day, I posted about how the Starlight Inception just hit its fundraising goal with a scant 26 minutes left on its clock. Today, ambitious mobile game, République managed a similar feat, hitting its $500,000 goal with only seven hours to go. While that’s not nearly as close as 26 minutes, it’s still damned impressive, and must come with a sigh of relief for Ryan Payton and the rest of the Camouflaj team who are working on the game.
“We did it! We reached our goal! Thank you everyone! This has been surreal. (Trying not to cry like a big baby right now.)” Tweeted Payton today.
As of this writing, there about three hours left to go, and the project has over $526,000 in funding with nearly 11,000 backers having pledged on Kickstarter page…and it’s still rising.
What’s interesting, though, is that these are not the easy, runaway successes that we’ve seen since Double Fine’s historic project launched a million other game-based Kickstarters. The only other two that seem to have hit similar levels of success were Obsidian’s Wasteland 2 project, and the one for Shadowrun Returns. Could these closer calls signal the end of the Kickstarter boom? Will things more or less go back to normal with regard to Kickstarted gaming projects? Hmmm…

I think that there will continue to be occasional successes, I think the hype will die down overall. Glad Republique made it though. I was rooting for them.
