Announced by Nintendo of America recently was the exciting news that a sequel to New Super Mario Bros, aptly titled New Super Mario Bros 2, is in production and will be made available for the Nintendo 3DS this August. Like its predecessor, New Super Mario Bros 2 will feature traditional 2D side-scrolling in a 3D environment, inhabited by none other than the likes of Mario, Luigi, and other Mushroom Kingdom characters.

Additionally, Nintendo will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of Kirby, the lovable pink puffball whose games are peppered throughout Nintendo’s extensive library of classic titles. They plan to release a special anniversary collection for the Wii later this year, containing a variety of past, fan-favorite Kirby games.

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive VP of Sales & Marketing expressed his enthusiasm for these two new 2012 releases:

“A new Mario game and a big Kirby celebration will help make 2012 an especially great year for Nintendo fans. Whether they’re playing at home on Wii or using Nintendo 3DS to have fun on the go, players can look forward to experiencing some of our biggest franchises in exciting ways.”

It’s been too long since we’ve had a new, genuine Kirby adventure – be it on a console or handheld. While this announcement is sadly not for that, I’ll gladly throw my money at a special anniversary Kirby collection.

So long as it has Kirby’s Adventure, Kirby’s Dreamland, The Crystal Shards, and Kirby Air Ride, I’ll be a happy camper.

Consider me anxious for more details.
