Dark Souls PC Already Spawns Angry Fan Petition

dark souls gfwl petition slider

The other day, we reported that Dark Souls would be making its way to PC, as was first revealed in the German magazine PC Action. Just yesterday, Namco Bandai released an official press release offering more details on the game’s impending PC release—and one of those details has fans pissed off already.

The game, dubbed Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition, is heading to your personal computer on August 24, and will include “an enhanced PVP mode allowing players to more closely assemble battles against one another online in an all-out fight to the death that fans have demanded.”

Fan demands—this is an important element of Dark Souls on PC, you see, because it was a fan-made petition that convinced Namco Bandai to bring the game from consoles to the computer.

And now that Namco Bandai has also announced that the game will utilize Games for Windows LIVE, well, there’s a fan-made petition looking to convince the company to abandon the online platform.

From the petition’s page:

“GFWL is unpopular, difficult to use, inconvenient, has terrible online support (a key feature in Dark Souls), and is downright unpleasant. After anxiously awaiting a PC release for this fantastic game it feels like a real slap in the face hearing Dark Souls will use Games for Windows Live. We recommend Valve’s Steamworks in place, as this DRM is much easier to use, less intrusive, more reliable, and more accepted among PC gamers. Please reconsider the use of GFWL, or offer the game on both services. Thank you for taking the effort to port this game, but for a lot of customers it’s Steam or no sale.”

Did you see that? IT FEELS LIKE A SLAP IN THE FACE.

Not for nothing, but something tells me that the person who wrote that has never actually been slapped in the face. I am willing to wager that most think a legit slap in the face feels way worse than hearing that a video game you want to play is going to be on Games for Windows LIVE.

Anyway, the petition’s already up to over 10,000 signatures as of this writing, having only been launched yesterday, I believe. No word yet on whether or not Namco Bandai will respond in a similar way to the petition that inspired them to port the game to the PC in the first place. But I’m going to go out on a limb and say: probably not.

What do you think? Is this another case of overly entitled nerd-rage? Or is Games for Windows LIVE really that bad that this petition is a necessary move on the part of fans?

Also: what do you think will inspire the next angry fan petition in video games? My money’s on something BioShock related.

Petitions are dumb. Getting angry never accomplishes anything. Expressing your concerns to pubs and Devs will likely cause them to hear out your concern.

      “Petitions are dumb.”
Yeah, did you hear of that petition to get Dark Souls to the PC? That was a complete joke! How the hell do people think they actually work? I mean… I don’t see Dark Souls coming to PC any time soo… Oh wait…

    • Posted by Count Vilanova on 12 April 12 at 1:38pm

never accomplishes anything? look at ME 3.
but yeah… they better add the updated stuff to the console versions.

    • Posted by smr on 12 April 12 at 2:33pm

Really? I’d like to hear what method you use to contact developers and express your concerns. Petitions are the best way to show them how many people have the same concerns as you, and it’s far more effective and less angsty than forum spam and blogs.

I guess these days, if you’re not bending over for a company, you’re being entitled. It’s funny really, because we just want to let them know how to more effectively take our money.

makes sense, steam would mean more sales for namco, but in essence it would behoove them to not run it through steam since there are definitely less issues with it and it has better support. The petition is a good idea, the term slap in the face should only be reserved for bioware since you know they know the true art of slapping their fans in the face.

This isn’t a petition that was induced by hatred to a portion of a great game rendered horrid by a five minute ending to change said ending (it rhymes with Bass Effect), this is an actual concern to pc gaming. Windows live is garbage for pc. Every game I buy that has Windows live is unplayable by my pc for some reason or another (every game tries to log in and blue screens my pc, that is not ok!). A few games that have done this are Bioshock 1 / 2 and Fallout 3 / NV, all of which I have had to perform days upon hours of troubleshooting just to play. This petition is simply the pc gaming community saying Windows live is incredibly flawed and there are much better options, as listed in the petition itself.

    • Posted by Leivve on 12 April 12 at 9:56am

      SteamWorks because Windows Live doesn’t.

    • Posted by smr on 12 April 12 at 2:37pm

Bass Effect, is that an upcoming DLC that turns all the chars into fish? Seriously, that’s the cure to the horrible endings. Coz it’s already a joke, so it should at least make me laugh ;)

      • Posted by BothersomeOne on 15 April 12 at 11:42pm

        Yep, Sheppard’s a fish and Tali’s a squid. She’s still hot ;)

At the end of the day, the devs are not some morons who made the decision to port over based on a petition alone. They gotta consider profits, after promotion and advertising. If using WL is a cheaper and easier option then liscensing Steam to sell their game, with a large ongoing liscensing ardangement and profit sharing

If using WL is a cheaper and easier option then liscensing Steam to sell their game, with a large ongoing liscensing agreement and profit sharing – what’s the pointof doing this if someone else gets all the money for it?? I like Steam, but demanding Namco to use it is just short sighted.

Well said. Microsoft’s likely throwing around money to get publishers to use their service. It’s possible that if Dark Souls wasn’t on GFWL, it wouldn’t be coming to PC at all.

      • Posted by Brian P Rubin on 12 April 12 at 11:15am

I love it when people use time to consider what they write and offer up logical arguments and reasoning. Unlike SOME BLOGGERS I KNOW (me).

    • Posted by smr on 12 April 12 at 2:43pm

This petition is showing how big of a deal-breaker GFWL is for many customers. If the publisher sees a potential loss of 10,000 buyers because it’s on GFWL, that could very well convince them to rethink their marketing strategy. So while no decision is based entirely on e-petitions, they certainly do factor in and are becoming more and more important for the gaming community.

  6. Posted by Drake on 12 April 12 at 10:43am

I really do agree with this new petition. I have no problem with GFWL (mainly because I have never used it anyway), but i would just much rather prefer the game be released on Steam… it would mean more sales really, which is what this game deserves! hopefully it would convince them to make a sequel.

  7. Posted by Timmeh on 12 April 12 at 11:26am

I agree with the petition, GFWL is some of the worst crapware used on PC games. Steamworks is now industry standard. GFWL will only prevent play and fuck up saves :(

  8. Posted by Galo on 12 April 12 at 11:45am

    “entitled”

There’s that word again. Is it really wrong for consumers to expect the best product possible? Would you say it’s the consumers fault or it’s wrong for them to complain if the producer of a product fucks up? This is basic economics, videogame makers aren’t magically given a free pass to screw over their customers.

    • Posted by kaka on 12 April 12 at 12:11pm

They aren’t screwing you over. You petitioned for a port and they gave you the port with even more awesome stuff added to it. This isn’t easy for them to do but they still took the time to do it because they saw how passionate the fan-base was.
Now that you’ve been given something better than the console versions you are petitioning for even MORE shit? You’re self-entitled, there’s no other way to put it really.

      • Posted by smr on 12 April 12 at 2:52pm

Damn straight I’m entitled — it’s MY money that I’m spending. The very reason our economy blows is because most consumers keep shelling money to companies who don’t care about them. Companies have to be shown that being awesome to your fanbase is a profitable thing, otherwise they can pull whatever shit they like.

  9. Posted by Guilherme on 12 April 12 at 1:01pm

Nice. This makes me jealous… My DS for XBOX is great, but its multiplayer is so bad, Namco should pay me to play it… Console multiplayer is BROKEN.
    Damn you LAGSTAB!

  10. Posted by Jason on 12 April 12 at 2:30pm

Maybe they should get members of the ‘Retake Mass Effect3′ movement….seems you need at least 65,000 signees to get a ‘Fan Demand’ to work, even if just for additional closure content. Might get them to 100,000 signees faster…which I hear is the minimal required QQ amount to get big changes like switching from Win Live to Steam.

  11. Posted by Aeph on 12 April 12 at 2:39pm

GFWL is even that bad. Geez, these people need to fucking chill.

    • Posted by Chris on 13 April 12 at 10:33pm

yeah but apparently some countries cant buy from gfwl

    • Posted by Chris on 13 April 12 at 10:34pm

i think… anyone know if there is some truth behind that?

  12. Posted by Aeph on 12 April 12 at 2:40pm

    *isn’t
I wish there was some sort of “edit comment” feature on this site.

  13. Posted by Jessey on 12 April 12 at 3:09pm

It still might come out on steam. I know dirt 2 used GFWL even after i bought it on steam.

  14. Posted by Mugeite on 12 April 12 at 3:25pm

They cry for a PC port… Then they cry when they get the port… I really hope petitions don’t affect EVERY game that comes out…

    • Posted by Flux on 12 April 12 at 4:40pm

They’re not crying because they got it, they’re complaining because it’s going to require you to use Games For Windows Live. GFWL’s service is terrible.
Half the time it doesn’t want to load correctly, and it adds FPS to a game when it shouldn’t just because it has to run in the background.
There’s a list of reasons people wouldn’t want GFWL.
So don’t think people are just complaining to complain, the Dark Souls community always has a reason for the things they petition.

      • Posted by David D. Davidson on 13 April 12 at 2:47pm

” it adds FPS to a game when it shouldn’t just because it has to run in the background.”

        Wow, you are retarded.

        • Posted by Brian on 16 April 12 at 12:16pm

Stop being a prick, you knew what he wanted to say.
What he meant to say was, it adds a performance hit to your games.

  15. Posted by foogison on 12 April 12 at 6:28pm

i honestly agree, games for windows live is the biggest pain in the ass ever, between forgetting saved account information and having to shut down your game to update or not have save data…. i probably wouldnt buy it if it was on GFWL

  16. Posted by Mark Davenport on 12 April 12 at 10:51pm

    Fuck steamworks!

    • Posted by LimeDude on 13 April 12 at 1:05pm

Steam rules, GFWL sucks!!!!! Steam 4 life bro!! XD

  17. Posted by LimeDude on 13 April 12 at 1:03pm

What a fuck ton of comments!!!!

  18. Posted by AshHousewares on 14 April 12 at 1:21pm

I really don’t mind GFWL, except when you’re required to enter your game product key to gain access to Live, and for Achievements. I think it’s more of a hassle than Steam, and when considering Dark Souls’ on the PC; this should be dealt with :p.

  19. Posted by SomeWISEguy on 14 April 12 at 2:34pm

Both sides have some valid points. But, I don’t know if this is true at all, I have heard/read somewhere that with the coming of “Windows 8″, GFWL and Xbox Live will merge bringing players from the consoles and PC users together. Again I don’t know if this is true, but if it is
then that MAY be the reason for using GFWL. Even so I agree that using SteamWorks over GFWL is much better.

  20. Posted by RepoMan on 14 April 12 at 5:11pm

Evidently you haven’t seen it for Windows 8 It’s just like the Xbox 360.. So I don’t see this being a problem for future titles..

  21. Posted by AFreakinProblem on 16 April 12 at 5:07am

To all those people calling us “entitled”, you clearly have no experience with Games for Windows Live at all. What if I was to tell you that I have six games (both Section 8s, GTA 4 + Episodes, Bioshock 2, Arkham Asylum) and told you that none of them work properly and that for the singleplayer focused games I have installed cracks just so I can play the damn things? What if I told you that GFWL is invasive as hell and gets in the way? Do I need to go into detail over the random crashes and corrupt saves? Those are the reasons why people are pissed off about Dark Souls using it. Almost forgot to add that A LOT of people won’t even be able to get this game legally because this “service” is only available in 35 countries whereas Steam is available world-wide.

  22. Posted by Vejorama on 16 April 12 at 7:44am

AFreakinProblem is melodramatic. Have several games including original Fallout that uses GFWL. Never had a problem whatsoever w it and Win7. His PC just sucks, lol.

  23. Posted by spamslots on 20 April 12 at 4:54pm

When I bought Fallout 3, it forced Games for Windows Live on me. And it sucked! I paid for expansions and the goddamn thing refused to install them! I went on the forums, I tried every single goddamn solution they listed, and nothing freaking worked. I had to PIRATE dlc that I legitimately paid for in order to make the packs work.

I did not have some exotic hardware configuration. I had a 3 GHz Intel chip, a common middle grade invidia card, fully patched windows, etc. And the forum was full of enablers and ass-kissers making excuses for what is essentially a crappy product.

Vejorama, just because you had no problems doesn’t mean other people who DID have problems have crappy computers. I’m not a scrub, I’m technically proficient, can program and design software, and have been part of a team that made a critical information system for the European Union. We’re not being melodramatic here; some people have no problems with GFWL but a lot of people DO, and for those that do, the problems are often unsolvable.

From then on, I refused to have anything to do with any GFWL game. I will never purchase one. Screw you GFWL, I have friends that can program something that does everything GFWL does in a fricking DAY.

  24. Posted by Jason on 06 May 12 at 4:27am

GFWL is a pile of shit.
Steam is a pile of shit.
The only legit digital distrobution method would be where you pay for digital content, install it, and play, end of. No forced updates, no checking if a couple of bytes in your game dont match or any of that crap. Just pay, install and play. You arsholes want to suck their MS or Valve dicks and say it tastes good, your business, but dont suggest other people must too. If people stopped using digital dustribtion, it would go away, but too many stupid people about. DVD was and still is the best distibution, but it costs them money, thats why they love digital distibution, and they can control whether you play or not. You stupid fucks for supporting that crap and destryoing your freedoms.

    • Posted by AKM on 20 June 12 at 10:43am

You’re the stupid fuck. Yeah, by using steam I’m destroying my freedoms. You gamers are a bunch of whiny little bitches, nothing else. All you fucktards screamed and moaned about SOPA and BIPA while the fucking US government was running guns to Mexican drug cartels in Fast & Furious. Oh yeah, SOPA and BIPA so horrible. That people are being killed with those guns, who gives a shit as long as you entitled cunts have your internet and can steal without anyone putting a foot down. That’s what this is all about. You, you and you. Nothing else matters to you little shits.

As for the topic at hand, Namco should just cancel it and tell all those cunts “fuck you”.
