Sony Unveils LittleBigPlanet Karting Details for PS3
Over on the PlayStation blog, Sony and United Front Games have offered a buttload of screens and details about LittleBigPlanet Karting, a title that was only briefly confirmed last month with nary a scrap of information.
As you can see from the announcement trailer above, the game borrows heavily from the playbook firmly established by the Mario Kart series, but the Create tools inherent to the LittleBigPlanet games are here too, which will allow players to build tracks in 3D. The result looks like it’ll be one of the most unique entrants into the “cute-kart-racing” genre. There are very few games that have managed to make a dent in this category besides Mario Kart, though—the one exception I can think of was Diddy Kong Racing for the N64, a game that was one and done. Here, it looks like we can expect something that might actually be worth playing.
A brief word about the unique features of the game from United Front Games:
“This is an LBP game, so we could never talk about it without mentioning the Create tools. LBP Karting is set in an entirely 3D world that will enable players to create rich and varied gameplay experiences. Tons of familiar LBP gadgets will be present, along with a new toolbox specifically tailored to allow for building in LBP Karting’s 3D world. Along with fan-favorite racing and battle modes, players will be able to modify the rules of the game itself to create completely new modes and challenges. All of this is wrapped up in a community experience that should have LBP fans feeling right at home.”
As you can see from the trailer, too, there’s local multiplayer racing and battle, allowing for up to four players on one console. I’m sure there’s going to be plenty of online multiplayer options too.
The game should be coming out sometime this year, though it’s not been made clear exactly when, to my knowledge. But it looks pretty good to me. What say you? Take a look at these screens and think about it:

It won’t be long until we can build full 3D platformers… can’t wait!
