The Portal 2 That Might’ve Been

I’m reasonably sure that Portal 2 was one of my favorite games from last year, if not of all time. The way the game managed to bend my brain around backwards with its puzzles while telling a fantastic (and very funny) story made it stand out in my mind as one of the greats.

But according to a post on Eurogamer, a recent talk from Valve’s Chet Faliszek and Eric Wolpaw at GDC reveals some of the paths Portal 2 could’ve gone down…some of which sound pretty great, if you ask me.

Just so you know, there may be some SPOILERS.

Apparently, in the game’s earlier incarnations, Wheatley stayed dead after being killed by GLaDOS, instead of coming back to rear his eye as the game’s final villain. Additionally, with Wheatley out of the way, gamers met many other spheres. Wolpaw told the audience at GDC about a couple, with this one sounding particularly hilarious in particular:

“As an example, this was one of them, something called the Morgan Freeman sphere. So he’d been sitting on that little pedestal for a few centuries, and he was just incredibly, incredibly wise—but only about the 20 by 20 space that he was in. So as soon as you dragged him 22 feet out of the room, his mind was blown and he was pretty much useless. Although as the game progressed, he eventually got his feet under him and started delivering some homespun wisdom that all related back to this 20 by 20 space.”

I can’t tell if that’s sarcasm at the end or not. The chance of a Portal 3 coming out is the same chance of HF3 coming out.

  Idiot. They already announced Portal 3. It’s based on Weatley drifting in outer space, eventually discovering an alien super structure that appears to be a planet. He then encounters a new alien race, far greater than the Covenant. Now, with Contana at his side, Weatley must……. Oh, wait….
