Earlier this month we reported that Epic Games let the word out that their newest iteration on the Unreal Engine would be seeing the light of day this year. Epic has officially announced that the engine will be showcased next week in San Francisco during GDC 2012.

Within the announcement, Epic stated that it will unveil Unreal Engine 4, the “next-generation game technology”, to “select licensees, partners and prospective customers during the exhibition.”

VP of Epic Games Mark Rein stated his excitement for the debut of their “ass-kicking” new tech:

“What’s really exciting about seeing this love letter to hardware manufacturers is understanding how Unreal Engine goes from iPhone right up to the most ass-kicking PC you can buy that’s hopefully representative of what the next-gen might be. And it’s ready today.”

One thing’s for sure – if they wow the crowds at GDC this year as much as they did last year with the Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan demo, faces might literally melt.

Yes, literally.

    If we don’t get DX11 with this, I’m going to be pissed… UE3 was good for a while, but DX10 was as high as it could handle, and most devs still only used DX9.

    By the way things are moving, I wouldn’t expect anything during 2012 except Nintendo’$ Wii U announcements. M$ just released the new xbox with kinect and $ony is still messing around with the Vita. And on top of that, it has traditionally taken over a year from announcement to launch the consoles… Unfortunately… It looks like we’d be lucky to see a 2014 launch date… And the UN4 looked so damn pretty…

    I miss when they used to show off new Unreal Engines with new Unreal/Unreal Tournament games… I want a new Unreal Tournament ;_;

    I mean it’s called the ‘Unreal’ engine, with the Unreal logo for the games and engine, and Unreal Tournament is seriously one of the better online multiplayer arena games so… Why the hell not.
