3DS Breaks Sales Record in Japan

3ds 5 mil

Remember a few months ago, when it was really, really fun to talk about how shitty the 3DS was, and how poorly it was selling, and how it was this big disaster for Nintendo, and JEEZ LOUISE there was just no way that it would ever be a success?

Well, over the weekend, the 3DS has crossed the 5 million sales mark in Japan, according to a post on Andriasang. And not only is 5 million units sold a big deal because, you know, 5 million is a big ol’ number, but the milestone has also set a record for hardware sales in Japan. Having reached 5 million on February 19, the 3DS is now the fastest selling piece of hardware in Japan, having hit 5 million only 52 weeks after its February 26 release almost exactly one year ago. The previous record holder, says the post, was the Nintendo DS, which crossed that same milestone in 56 weeks, and the Game Boy Advance before that in 58 weeks.

Not a bad announcement for Nintendo—especially considering that Sony’s PlayStation Vita, their biggest rival in the handheld market (not counting Apple and every other cell phone maker), goes worldwide this week. As we’ve seen, since its release nine weeks ago, the Vita has struggled to find an audience in Japan. Let’s see if its fortunes fare better in the States.

Ive have had a 3ds and believed in it from day 1 and love it.I am also going to tell you that I have the 1st addition vita bundle and i love the psvita aswell…Dont listen to any negative reviews from anyone out there.Bottom line this systems has everything the psp was and more. The only reason I can see someone not buying this system is if they just cant afford it or there favorite franchise hasnt came the the vita yet.Its definitely worth every penny in my opinion and i wouldnt have paid any less. In fact,it would almost be an insult to tell sony to lower the price, however if for some reason the vita struggles with sales in the us or even continuing in japan, we just have to wait for special addition vita bundles & games like assassins creed, gta, metal gear, bio shock, call of duty etc.

This system is totally capable of handling ps3 graphics and those types of games so at this point developers have no excuse of why they cannot make a top quality console game for the vita..Hell i would even accept a ps3 port on this system.

I agree completely with you. Frankly, I find the console or handheld (if they even exist) wars are idiotic. In my personal opinion, I loved both the DS and the PSP because they had some pretty damn good games on it.

For the most part, the Vita is a moneyeater. That’s not going to stop me from getting it, but the fact that compared to Nintendo’s 3DS which is sold at $170, and that a game would cost $30-$40, the Vita appears to be overly expensive since the system costs $240-$250 (Wi-fi), then a memory card would be at $30-$100 (prices of 8gb and 32gb respectively) as well as the cost of games being about the same as the 3DS, the Vita will definitely lose out in the minds of the parents that are buying these gadgets for their kids; it’s just too expensive.

It’s common knowledge that most people are not avid gamers. The largest demographic of the 3DS are younger people who saw it in a commercial or at a store shortly before it came and had start saving for it then. Another possibility is that people were waiting to see if anything would come of it.
