Syndicate Developer Starbreeze Lays off 25 Employees
Announced via post on GamesIndustry.biz, Swedish developer Starbreeze, creators of Syndicate and the Chronicles of Riddick games, has cut 25 jobs following Syndicate’s recent completion.
Peter Tornquist, Chairman of the board of directors at Starbreeze since 2007 (and vice chairman for 5 years prior), is said to resign from his position at the company. The developer hasn’t confirmed any plans to replace him.
Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark gave a brief explanation for the cutbacks:
“It is sad that we are forced to make staff cutbacks affecting employees, but we have to reduce staff after the final delivery of the Syndicate.”
The company’s newest game Syndicate will release on February 21 for the US and three days later in the UK. It will be available on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 platforms.
It’s always, always, always terrible news to hear about job loss in this industry. Whether it’s staff layoffs or the shutdown of an entire studio, knowing that the people who made some of your favorite game experiences are no longer on the job is saddening to say the very least.
We wish the best of luck to those affected.
