“Strategic realignment” seems to be a fancy way of saying “we’re about to fire some people.”

According to a post on Joystiq from yesterday, THQ has laid off some more members of staff, only days after announcing a “strategic realignment” that would see the company focus on their “core franchises,” moving away from kids’ games. The post notes that the publisher’s five internal studios were untouched in this latest round of layoffs, while employees in the administrative and publishing departments were on the chopping block this time around.

While the company didn’t explain how many people were affected, the post also offers a statement from THQ on the staff cuts:

“As recently announced, the company is exiting the kids’ licensed games category, and is focusing on its core game franchises and developing its digital initiatives. The company will provide greater financial detail regarding the costs and organizational benefit on its third quarter 2012 conference call scheduled for Thursday, February 2, 2012.”

This doesn’t reflect too terribly well on THQ considering their widely reported financial troubles of late, as well as the anonymous letter sent by a former employee, detailed in the above-linked story. Let’s hope that all this realigning will help the company put these various difficulties and apparent black eyes behind them.

Our condolences to anyone affected by this latest round of lay offs.
