Mojang Adds Cats and More in New Minecraft Update

Mojang, creators of Minecraft, have released a new “snapshot update” that introduces a few new inventory items, but more importantly adds a new friendly mob, Ocelots (cats).

Located in the jungle biome, these cat creatures are passive and shy when first found, and will sprint away if approached too quickly. You’ll find them occasionally sneaking up and pouncing on chickens for fun, as is a cat’s nature. Similar to wolves, cats can be tamed, but with raw fish instead of a bone.

Upon taming, the cat will become yours and will proceed to follow you around. You can tame multiple cats; with a handful of different varieties available (Go to about 1:00 in the above video to see them all at once).

They can also be bred and produce kittens, which I should add, are the most adorable freaking thing I’ve ever seen.

Additional update features include:

  • Skeletons have new AI and a few new behaviors (avoid sunlight)
  • Added an experience item to creative mode (mystery)
  • Added a flame item… (mystery)
  • Updated language files
  • Various minor bug fixes and changes

The update can be downloaded from the Mojang website.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have some jungle biomes to explore and a ranch style block home to fill with cats. Yes, my Minecraft character is going to be one of those “cat ladies”.
