Amalur’s EA Online Pass Contains Seven Single-Player Quests
EA’s forthcoming Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will offer an incentive to buy the game new, as the game will include the EA Online Pass, which can be redeemed for seven single-player missions known as “The House of Valor” faction quest, says a post on Eurogamer today. A new copy of the game will also unlock a Mass Effect 3 inspired in-game item, which is also available to gamers who play the forthcoming ME3 demo, which should be out on Valentine’s Day.
But gamers who buy a copy of the game used will have to shell out extra cash to purchase an Online Pass and access that content, which is becoming something of a trend for the bigger game releases these days.
I do appreciate it when a company looks to persuade their consumers to buy the product new, as it helps them recoup the cost of developing the game, and almost acts as a “thank you,” and I also think it’s good that there is an option in place for budget gamers who buy used. But the whole thing definitely has a bit of a grimy vibe to it—mainly because I’m not so sure that these kinds of tactics will always be used in the best ways.
I can picture a scenario in the future where not only is extra content withheld from used-buyers, but significant portions of the actual game, forcing them to pay more. Let’s hope that’s a future that never comes to pass…that never comes to ONLINE PASS, THAT IS.
