It’s no secret that Nintendo’s online situation can best be described as “crappy,” to use the technical term. Browsing and shopping for online content has always been something of a hassle, and forget about actually connecting online with friends—“friend codes” are terrible, and will always remain so.

That’s why the rumors of a forthcoming overhaul to Nintendo’s online presence are pretty exciting. Late last week, an image of box art for the upcoming Japanese 3DS release Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy was Tweeted—revealing a logo for what’s rumored to be a new, unified Nintendo Network.

According to NintendoEnthusiast, an anonymous source has offered up details that the company is working on a new online network to unify their two big consoles, 3DS and Wii U, in order to finally compete with Sony and Microsoft’s online networks.

Says the post:

“A source that wished to remain anonymous has told us that Nintendo will launch a website accessible from any web browser that will handle configuration of your Nintendo Network account for use on the Wii U or 3DS. He also stated that Nintendo Network will include many new features that haven’t been used before by Nintendo. According to his accounts: Nintendo Network = Sony PSN = Xbox Live.”

The post goes on to offer more details and clarification from this supposed anonymous source:

“Our source saw the article and wanted to make sure that people understood that he didn’t mean necessarily that Nintendo’s service will be better or feature every single detail that Sony and Microsoft do, rather that until now Nintendo hasn’t even tried to compete but now they are going to create a service that is in full competition with the others. But of course, each one will still have their own style. However, he had one other detail to add: ‘What I can add to all this is that there is in fact one feature that is significantly ahead of one of the competitors, and I’m not talking about the well know [sic] ability to video chat. A few users on another console will be quite upset.’”

VAGUE. But still, online connectivity is a must at this point in gaming, and ease of connectivity is even mustier. MUSTIER!

Frankly, if this new Nintendo Network will, in fact, compete with Sony and Microsoft, let’s hope that it’ll allow for some voice chat abilities on the 3DS in the future. The only thing missing from online matches of Mario Kart 7 is yelling at your friends…and considering that the PlayStation Vita will allow for online chat, I’m hoping that Nintendo’s handheld will get in on this.

The post also notes that Nintendo will be holding a press conference on January 26, so expect to maybe hopefully hear more official news about this later this week…

Riiiiiight, more like all they can do is silly little aditions after many, many years, the original xbox had better online support then whatever Nintendo has been doing untill now, it’s kinda late to jump into the net support.

      Maybe next console.
