Mortal Kombat Coming to PS Vita This Spring, Kratos A Playable Character
In a statement released this morning, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that Mortal Kombat is in development for the PlayStation Vita, and will be arriving on store shelves this coming spring.
With NetherRealm Studios behind the development of the game, Mortal Kombat on the Vita will provide an “on-the-go” gaming experience with new gameplay features and content created exclusively for the handheld.
Ed Boon, Creative director at NetherRealm, mentions the success of last year’s franchise iteration, as well as what to expect in the handheld version:
“The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita.
The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”
The announcement also details the addition of both Tag Team and Challenge Tower modes, as well as a deeper story. The game is also set to bring the game back into the 2D fighting plane, for those who aren’t fans of…3D fighting planes.
Several other new features have been developed for the Vita, but will be revealed later in the coming months.
While this wasn’t mentioned in the press release, it does appear that this iteration of Mortal Kombat will sport a special character or two, specifically Kratos (God of War series). Don’t believe me? Take a look at the official box art above.
In addition to the game’s announcement, the release offered up details of what Sony is calling the “Vita Hill Social Club”. It’s here that you’ll be able to get your grubby hands on the system, and even some launch titles.
Essentially, these Sony-hosted meet-ups will offer gamers the chance to play not only the PlayStation Vita system, but the upcoming Mortal Kombat as well.
You can find out more information on the Vita Hill Social Club web page.
