EA Responds to Battlefield 3 Launch Issues, Considers Player Compensation

If you’re one of the many players that have thrown your headset in frustration that Battlefield 3 absolutely refuses to put your party into a squad or keeps dropping you from matches, EA Games’ Executive Vice President Patrick Soderlund feels your pain.

“We understand how frustrating it is not to be able to play the game without interruption,” Soderlund said to Machinima.

Because of that, EA is considering some sort of gift to serve as apology for the game’s jittery performance.

“We are always looking at ways to generate customer satisfaction and we’re definitely considering a gift to thank players for their patience and dedication, but our #1 road to their happiness is to get everyone playing smoothly and ensure 100% stability,” Soderlund said. “We are gamers too and we understand that no gift will match the experience of getting in the game and playing with friends.”

Soderlund admits that the launch-day jitters for Battlefield 3 have been a bit rough, but it’s gotten better since, and they’re working hard to make it perfect for everyone, all the time.

“Though the first day of launch was somewhat volatile, we are happy to report that server support stabilized to roughly 98.9% through our launch weekend and has not dropped since. That said, we will not rest until we’re at 100% . We are committed to supporting the game as a software service, and listening to consumer feedback every day,” Soderlund said. “We are making daily updates and improvements to ensure an optimal online experience for all. Regardless of the cause or platform, our team at DICE and our Online teams are working together, standing by to identify the issues and addressing them as they arise. Every big multiplayer game experiences some instability at launch. The good news is, we’re listening, responding and improving the service every day.”

Unfortunately there’s no easy fix to the infrastructure problems experienced by the game. Personally, I’ve heard many gamers wonder why EA can’t just go out and buy more servers, or why they didn’t have a larger infrastructure ready to go on day one. Soderlund explains that there’s no silver bullet for those problems.

“There are a number of different factors impacting server connectivity. It isn’t just about buying more servers. Capacity isn’t the only factor. Server architecture, data centers, data transfer — it all makes for an extraordinarily complex system that becomes increasingly  intricate as we grow from supporting 1M players to 3M players to 5M players and beyond. That is why we continue to invest in servers, infrastructure and people to support the game,” Soderlund said. “We are dedicated to constantly improving connectivity.”

Soderlund also addressed the swirling scorn that constantly surrounds EA’s fledgling Origin service. Just yesterday, in fact, a hack surfaced that removed Origin’s necessity in playing Battlefield 3.

“There is a lot of misinformation out there about Origin. Origin is not spyware, and does not use or install spyware on user’s machines. Consumer privacy is very important to DICE and EA, and we take every precaution to protect personal and anonymous user data. The policies supporting Origin are industry standard privacy protocols employed by many other popular web services, and there is absolutely nothing malicious in the software that should create concerns about privacy,” Soderlund said. “As players become increasingly familiar with the service and its benefits when playing games like Battlefield 3, we believe that Origin will be embraced and appreciated more and more by gamers worldwide.”

Ultimately Soderlund wants Battlefield 3 players to know that both EA and DICE are grateful for their support, and that they’re pledging lasting support for this game. This will come not only in terms of infrastructure and a better play experience, but new game content like the Back to Karkand DLC pack due out in December.

“In two words: thank you,” Soderlund said. “We are overwhelmed by the positive response we’ve received from gamers around the world. The DICE team has lived and breathed Battlefield 3 for the last few years and it’s an exciting time for us to finally share something we are so passionate about with millions of gamers. The best reward for us is the amazing feedback we’ve seen from our fans. They are helping us make the game better every single day.”

If you’re itching to leave feedback of your own, Soderlund provides a few tips for interacting with the team.

“There are a number of ways to reach us. They can submit questions via www.battlefield.com or http://www.facebook.com/battlefield. They can also follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/battlefield for the latest news,” Soderlund said. “Again, thank you for all your support. I hope to see you on the Battlefield.”

Can someone help me. I have never hated a battlefield game. But I have gotten so mad while playin this game I snapped a controller in half. Here is my problem. With my gun I have to shoot an enemy 14 times but for An enemy he only has to shoot me with 5 bullets. I’m not even joking. I tested it with a friend. He we worked hard and I got him on the enemy team and he we tested it bullet by bullet. And every time the results were the same 5 bullets to kill me. 15 to kill him. Wtf If with that can someone help me? Am I doing SOMTHING wrong? Does ea and dice hate me. I’m just sad I can’t return this damn game and go play battlefield bad. Co 2 but seriously can I get a response PLEASE BEFORE I SNAP THIS DAMN DISK In FRUSTRATION??

EA runs one of the worst customer ‘support’ out there. They wont reply to your querries if you mail them. So I tried live chat. Boy you wouldn’t belieave the guys there. I doubt if thay have ever operated a computer.

I am having this issue with Battlefield 3 & GTX 570 where the game freezes every 2-7 minutes. It works perfectly when I use my older 9800 GTX+ card. So I contacted both EA and Asus(my card vendor). There has been ore than 4 replies from Asus while EA has not replied yet.

Thats when I tried their Live Chat. One of them told me to change my network settings. I told her several times, that I have no issue with connecting to battlelog and it works well with my old gfx card). But she insisted and I made the changes. It did not fix anything and even worse, now I cannt play other gamaes either. So I asked her how I can revert it back and she did not reply. OS I had to search the net to bring it back as before.

These guys they never listen to what you say. Even a kid knows the issue is with graphics or RAM. But they ask you to clean your disk, defragment it, change net work settings.

Boy, I am not going to buy another EA title ever in my life. But that doesn’t mean I wont play them. Its funny, pirated games work better than genuine counterparts. :P

    Connection problems they say?

    > The game has horrendous color grading

    > sun gale is retarded

    > Insta-kill still present (from 100% to 0% health in 1 second)

    > dying behind cover

    > no spectator

    > no battlerecorder

    > audio-spoting aka minimap auto-spot is completly retarded

Seems to me that EA has much more things to worry about than “connection problems”..

I have to agree here, really.
I haven’t had many issues with the game stuttering or lagging, and once every few hours it might randomly disconnect. I blame a combination of bad net code, EA, and taking the server browser out of the game and shunting it into a web browser.

Gameplay, however, is a real issue for me. Besides the issues mentioned in THERAIDER’s post, I’ll add:

Mouse input: Reverse mouse acceleration has killed my ability to aim quickly. Please get rid of it. For the love of all that is holy, FIX IT.

HUD Clutter: In Bad Company 2, the further away something is, the less visible it is on your hud. This was a godsend: I can’t count how many times I’ve died because I couldn’t tell whether someone was an enemy, simply because of how many god damned neon icons are filling my screen!

Unfair death: Death by jumping out of a friendly vehicle and getting teamkilled (which I would’ve hoped had been fixed since BC2). Death by “bad luck”: no one was attacking me, but out of the blue I started losing health!

Spawning: In BC2, I at least felt like I was working in some sort of direction with my squad. Now it feels like ‘spawn somewhere, run off in a random direction and hope the rest of your team might have the same idea’.

      Communication: There is none.

Flashlight glare: In bright daylight, it is ridiculous to expect a flashlight mounted on a pistol to be able to blind you even better than the sun does. Especially considering that at least half of the player models are running around with tinted goggles!

Really, it feels like they released the game a month too early, without getting enough information from actual gamers.

The game is great, there are a few issues with disconnects on start & during play but generally it’s good. My only concern is DICE/EA change the game in ways that make existing players that enjoy it , play less.

Overall the game comes across well, the multiplayer aspect is v.good and the selection of options good too. Cheating & hacking is being dealt with which is a big plus. If EA/Dice keep up the good work and add elements to the product, it will surely only get better.

What ever happens I’m sure EA/Dice will make things better in the near future, the game is alot of fun & that’s what it’s really about at the end of the day, entertainment…. For all those with technical issues, EA/DICE should setup a live bug list system where multiple problems of the same can be recorded onto a user viewable list.

This game is not a BF2 sequel. BF3 needs no teamplay. All you need is rush rush rush … i’m already bored of it. No fun.

Great game, love the tactics and the scale of the maps and color scheme, etc!

The main problem for me is the MIC ISSUE (PS3). Without decent voice chat this game is not as much fun. It is a team-based FPS and its replayability and long-term life depends on the ability to be social while playing.

I was able to fix the issue with communication in the squad options menu in the class select screen during game play and it works great now. The default setting is set to private so no one can hear each other. If you set it to public for privacy and to squad for the other (can’t remember the option name) then you can be heard. My friends and I did it and now we are having zero problems. Hope that helps. Also PSN: DixonBeaver if you ever want to play.

I have reported a multitude of problems associated with the game within the battlelog feedback link on the left of the page. It mentions within the article that “they” care about the issues that gamers are experiencing. As of yet, (even after many posts) I haven’t received any indication of any kind, that EA or DICE have read or even seen them. I am in complete agreement with a lot of other players in my opinion that the game wasn’t ready for release. Although for the most part fun (when it isn’t crashing or being “temperamental”) , it isn’t the quality game we, as gamers, should expect for our money.

Everytime I tried to start a match my ps3 freezes or drops me during a match then I got to restart the system all over could it be the game it self I’m kinda confused on why this is happening

I also got several issues whit bf 3 and especially whit origin.

After my hard complaining I got a ban.So I paid in full a game what works very bad since is publishing.

Italian support make loosing money to ea games becouse banning several players.

A bastard called fernando of italian support banning several customers so these will not buy further games from ea.

    I have several problems too:I bought bf 3 for pc and for x box 360;

There are differents issues but they are too much.

I have a long list of bugs, disconnection, black screens, sound crash and other.

I wanna be refunded from ea game but they will not.

So I complained hard for bugs and they banned me.

So I spent 60 euros + 65 euros for both platforms and I lost my money.

    In future I will not buy no more ea games for me and friends.;

I forgotten: Also my friends have several issues.

Ea game I think you are the shame of software houses becouse to get money fast you sold out a beta and not a real game.

  17. Posted by Bond on 30 December 11 at 1:57pm

EA I shit on you… your greed manage to destroy many good games that you buy from smaller studios, just to outrun MW3 you put game in sell earlier. I play PC versions, I invest serious money on MY PC just to experience max from games today… I already burn my fingers by buying one for your games earlier and now I feel like dumb idiot to try it again… I will play your game in a month or two when stable pirate game will be available but you wont see a dollar form me ever… you can thanx to those pirates as there is still enough souls who will get stuck on the game by playing pirate but trust me if pirate game fail gamers of the world will burn your shitty company and all of your (hard working) idiots in there… xD maybe not burn but surely stop giving you any attention…

It’s a great game, but it has way to much lag on mt screen people are still running when I come around a corner. And they don’t stop and still kill me. And it is not my connection it is the servers.

    What ever!!
I don’t like this bit – or that bit. Who cares!! Don’t like it – don’t play it!!
What they need to do is put the campaign back on my pc so I don’t have to log in through some online crap server to play!! Oh wait!! I can’t play coz the freaking game won’t initialize!!!!!!!!

  23. Posted by Socal on 10 January 12 at 1:48pm

I was on the phone with ea customer service for 2 1/2 hours trying to figure out the problem. We tried everything them and I could think of. In they end they basically had know idea.

    My response:
What a load of sh- t

Input lag still exists on the ps3 over 3 months after launch. 852 customers have registered as having the problem on http://getsatisfaction.com/battlefield3/topics/input_lag_on_ps3_large_number_of_people_affected.
How about an official update? There hasn’t been one – despite people contacting you repeatedly on twitter, on the battlelog, directly at EA, or directly at DICE.

  29. Posted by Ewan on 09 February 12 at 11:39pm

Origin is a pretty poor piece of interface software. The whole installation process for this was quite frankly bewildering, no exe. file for luanch, web launch page telling me I haven’t installed the game and wouldn’t run (when I clearly watched the process hit 100%).

Then the massive 4G update that took forever to install and probably cost me extra $$ from my ISP.

My lord EA go look at Steam, it actually works.

Oh yeah and I haven’t actually been able to play this game yet, despite paying for a legit version! Shocking.

BF3 is a major disappointment for thousands of community members. The latest patch has finally “Nailed It” as in nailed the coffin shut on BF3. Uninstalled and waiting for Planetside 2 and Diablo 3 now. EA will never see a dollar from me ever again, mark my words. I’ve written this down everywhere, I am not turning back. I will pirate EA games if they get a decent comment from an actual user I trust, not a news site. I will NEVER again put money into this company until the day that I die or they do.
