Arkham City Sells 2M in First Week; Nobody Surprised

Today, Warner Bros. Interactive and Rocksteady, the makers of the current franchise of Bat-Games, have announced that Batman: Arkham City has shipped 4.6 million units worldwide, while doubling the sales of its predecessor, Batman: Arkham Asylum.

How many units sold, you ask? Well, the press release doesn’t say, but an article in the L.A. Times today notes that the company claims that it’s sold 2 million copies—and that’s a claim I see no reason to dispute.

“The true test for any game is what the players think and we have been thrilled by their reaction to Batman: Arkham City,” said Game Director at Rocksteady Studios Sefton Hill in the press release.  “The team at Rocksteady put every ounce of effort into making the best Batman experience we possibly could, so we are overwhelmed by the incredible feedback from the community.”

When I was on line to pay for my copy of the game last Tuesday, I was preceded and followed by men doing the very same thing. The guy behind me actually said, “Man, that’s a lot of Batman.”

You have no idea, dude.

To get personal for a moment, I actually finished the main story mode in about three days, which actually made me sad. Why? Because I thought I had much more Batmanning to do. Luckily, I have a couple more side-missions to complete…I’m still trying to find the Identity Theft Killer (I’ll take some hints here, but I’m waiting until I’m totally stumped to start searching online for where to go next). And, of course, I’m working on getting as many of the Riddler challenges as possible, so’s I can save all the hostages.

Man, what a great fucking game. I’m very, very hopeful that the third game in the series puts you in Gotham City proper, and lets you team up with your various Bat-partners (such as Robin, Nightwing, or even Batgirl), and that maybe you can take down the thugs via multiplayer. Wouldn’t that be the BEST?

Oh, yeah, I was writing a news article.

So, in conclusion, Arkham City sold a lot, and it will keep selling, probably—until today, I guess, since Battlefield 3 just came out.

The end.

Excellent game. I can’t wait for the next one (here’s hoping for a drivable Bat-Mobile). My vote for Game of the Year so far.

FYI: if you’re stuck with the Identity Thief, best advice is to look for more bodies; get somewhere high up, activate detective vision, and look for dead people, they still show up in blue like those who are alive. If you can’t see one, move to another location and repeat.

I think there are only 4 bodies to find. It’s a great side mission which gives a hint to the next game.

Aha, your hopes of teaming up with the batgirl in the potential next game isn’t so bright, because the Oracle was Batgirl before she became paralyzed by the Joker :/

Sonny, all it takes is one visit to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batgirl#Characters

There have been many, many Batgirls. And, Tim Drake isn’t even Robin anymore–so in the universe of the game, all they need to do is pluck one of these five lovely ladies from the comics and stick’em in the game.

Don’t try to out-Batman me, Junior.

Sure is more than expected. I mean, I was expecting those sales in a lifetime but in a week? Man.
