Super Mario and Portal Mash-Up Becoming Indie-Made Reality

By now, we’ve seen those great Dorkly videos that give portal-guns to classic gaming characters, including Mega Man, Link, and of course, Super Mario.
Two intrepid fans/indie-game developers/mash-up artists, either inspired by these videos or not, are currently hard at work at Mari0, which envisions the original Super Mario Brothers…but with a portal-gun. As you can see from the gameplay sample in the above video, it looks like it’s working out really, really well.
The two, Maurice Guégan and Sašo Smolej, call their efforts Stabyourself, and on their website there are links to different projects they’ve created, as well as small glimpses into what they’re still working on, such as a physics-based Tetris sequel (which results in a mess of unaligned bricks at the bottom of the screen), an unofficial sequel to Pacman, and a game in which you kick a soccer ball into a hooker’s face, who then makes fun of you.
Here’s the description of what we’ll be able to expect with Mari0 is finished:
“A complete from scratch recreation of Super Mario Bros. with a focus on perfectly imitating the feel the 1985 classic gave us. Then give Mario a portal gun, add puzzle game mechanics from Portal and there you go. And if that wasn’t crazy enough, play simultaneously with as many friends as you can connect joypads to your PC, with everyone having their own Portal gun!”
When will Mari0 be done? I don’t know. But I want it. Now. Please.
While we wait, let’s imagine the possibilities with Dorkly’s finest Portal mash-ups with gaming classics:
