Hmm, a game that you pay for before you can play, but you can play it without a fee after that… what a radical and unprecedented business model.
To be fair, that’s an oversimplification. CCP Games revealed now they plan to kick off their PS3-exclusive Dust 514, which will tie in to the massive space MMO Eve Online. According to the report, players will have to pay a one-time $10-$20 fee when they want to start playing the game, which will be converted into in-game currency. From then, you can play the game for free.
“You’re really getting the game for free but you have to pre-buy credits in the beginning. We might go fully free-to-play down the line, but in the beginning we have a cover charge just to manage the initial launch of it,” CCP CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson said.
There’s no details on what you can spend this digital currency on just yet, but I’m betting it’ll be something impulsive and addictive. That way when you run out of your initial supply of Dust funbux you’ll be motivated to buy more. That much, at least, is original.
